A series of α-acyl formamidinium ions and their corresponding 1-electron reduced neutral radicals were synthesized, and their electrochemical properties were evaluated. These cations exhibit multi-electron redox processes that are highly electrochemically reversible at rapid scan rates (100 mV s(-1)), and the redox potentials were readily tailored by up to ∼1.0 V, making them ideal candidates for organic radical-based charge storage materials.

Carbene-derived α-acyl formamidinium cations: organic molecules with readily tunable multiple redox processes.

Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts that have both high activities and long-term stabilities are needed for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. Two-dimensional (2D) materials based on graphene have shown high catalytic activities, however, carbon-based materials result in significant catalyst degradation due to carbon oxidation that occurs at high electrochemical potentials. Here, we introduce the synthesis and electrochemical performance of metallic 2D nanoframes which represent a new approach to translate 2D materials into unsupported (carbon-free) electrocatalysts that have both significantly higher ORR catalytic activities and stabilities compared with conventional Pt/carbon electrocatalysts. Metallic Ni-Pt 2D nanoframes were synthesized by controlled thermal treatments of Pt-decorated Ni(OH) nanosheets. The nanoframes consist of a hierarchical 2D framework composed of a highly catalytically active Pt-Ni alloy phase with an interconnected solid and pore network that results in three-dimensional molecular accessibility. The inclusion of Ni within the Pt structure resulted in significantly smaller Pt lattice distances compared to those of Pt nanoparticles. On the basis of its unique local and extended structure, the ORR specific activity of Ni-Pt 2D nanoframes (5.8 mA cm) was an order of magnitude higher than Pt/carbon. In addition, accelerated stability testing at elevated potentials up to 1.3 V showed that the metallic Ni-Pt nanoframes exhibit significantly improved stability compared with Pt/carbon catalysts. The nanoarchitecture and local structure of metallic 2D nanoframes results in high combined specific activity and elevated potential stability. Analysis of the ORR electrochemical reaction kinetics on the Ni-Pt nanoframes supports that at low overpotentials the first electron transfer is the rate-determining step, and the reaction proceeds via a four electron reduction process. The ability to create metallic 2D structures with 3D molecular accessibility opens up new opportunities for the design of high activity and stability carbon-free catalyst nanoarchitectures for numerous electrocatalytic and catalytic applications.

Metallic Two-Dimensional Nanoframes: Unsupported Hierarchical Nickel-Platinum Alloy Nanoarchitectures with Enhanced Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction Activity and Stability.

We previously described how thousands of the heme protein cytochrome  (cyt.) self-organize into multilayered, roughly spherical superstructures as initiated by nucleation around one colloidal gold or silver nanoparticle. Within these superstructures, the protein is stabilized to unfolding in buffered media and survives superstructure encapsulation within silica gels and processing to form bioaerogels. We now report that Au∼cyt. superstructures in buffered media are not simply static groupings of proteins, but that the Au core and protein corona exhibit dynamic electron-transfer reactions within the superstructure as verified by UV-visible and resonance Raman spectroscopy. Within the superstructure, hundreds to thousands of ferricytochrome  (Fe-cyt.) are reduced to ferrocytochrome  (Fe-cyt.) following first-order kinetics with an average apparent forward rate constant of 1.9 ±0.4 × 10 s. The reducing power in the microheterogeneous medium is derived from two multielectron reductants: tannic acid used to stabilize the commercial gold sol and the Au nanoparticle at the center of the protein superstructure. Fluorescence monitoring of guanidinium chloride-induced unfolding reveals that superstructure-associated cyt. is stabilized to unfolding before and after chemical reduction of Fe-cyt. to form Fe-cyt., indicating that the superstructures remain intact during microheterogeneous redox reactions. Smaller nucleating Au nanoparticles or lower ionic strength in the buffered medium yields a greater extent of cyt. reduction. Partial oxidation of the cyt.-associated nanoparticulate Au is verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Au nanoparticle at the heart of the superstructure functions as a direct electron donor to the heme with oxidized Au atoms being recycled back to Au(0) as long as residual tannic acid, derived from the Au sol mother liquor, is present in the aqueous microheterogeneous medium.

Redox Cycling within Nanoparticle-Nucleated Protein Superstructures: Electron Transfer between Nanoparticulate Gold, Molecular Reductant, and Cytochrome .

Acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts that have high activity, extended durability, and lower costs are needed to further the development and wide-scale adoption of proton-exchange membrane electrolyzers. In this work, we report hydrous cobalt-iridium oxide two-dimensional (2D) nanoframes exhibit higher oxygen evolution activity and similar stability compared with commercial IrO; however, the bimetallic Co-Ir catalyst undergoes a significantly different degradation process compared with the monometallic IrO catalyst. The bimetallic Co-Ir 2D nanoframes consist of interconnected Co-Ir alloy domains within an unsupported, carbon-free, porous nanostructure that allows three-dimensional molecular access to the catalytically active surface sites. After electrochemical conditioning within the OER potential range, the predominately bimetallic alloy surface transforms to an oxide/hydroxide surface. Oxygen evolution activities determined using a rotating disk electrode configuration show that the hydrous Co-Ir oxide nanoframes provide 17 times higher OER mass activity and 18 times higher specific activity compared to commercial IrO. The higher OER activities of the hydrous Co-Ir nanoframes are attributed to the presence of highly active surface iridium hydroxide groups. The accelerated durability testing of IrO resulted in lowering of the specific activity and partial dissolution of Ir. In contrast, the durability testing of hydrous Co-Ir oxide nanoframes resulted in the combination of a higher Ir dissolution rate, an increase in the relative contribution of surface iridium hydroxide groups and an increase in specific activity. The understanding of the differences in degradation processes between bimetallic and monometallic catalysts furthers our ability to design high activity and stability acidic OER electrocatalysts.
