Opioid induced constipation (OIC) is a symptom that is commonly encountered in cancer pain management. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has been widely used to improve OIC in China. Many clinical trials indicate that CHM could improve OIC. In this systematic review, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CHM for OIC in cancer patients.

Chinese herbal medicine for opioid induced constipation in cancer patients: Protocol for a systematic review.

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a prevalent and debilitating symptom experienced by cancer survivors, one that severely compromises functional independence and quality of life. Clinical massage therapy (CMT), as an important part of complementary and alternative medicine, is widely employed among massage therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and physicians when managing CRF. Clinical research indicates that CMT produced relief of CRF. In this systematic review, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of CMT for patients with CRF.

Clinical massage therapy for patients with cancer-related fatigue protocol of a systematic review.

Crohn disease (CD) is a chronic relapsing systemic inflammatory disease afflicting the gastrointestinal system with a high morbidity. There has been increasing clinical interest in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for CD. This report aims to present patient outcome of therapeutic management using TCM in combination with pharmacologic therapy.

Traditional Chinese medicine for management of recurrent and refractory Crohn disease: A case report.

 The study aims to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine () injections for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and gastric cancer.  A randomized, controlled, multicenter study from December 2013 to August 2015.  All patients are from China.  One hundred forty patients with either NSCLC or gastric cancer were enrolled in this trial.  The intervention group ( = 70) was given  injections (1 dose/day for 10 days) with chemotherapy, whereas the control group ( = 70) was given chemotherapy only. The follow up period was 11 days after the final injection.  Platelet (PLT) count was tested at day 0, 7, 14, and 21 as the primary outcome for evaluation. Safety measurements, including red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HBG), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil (NE)#, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), creatinine (Cr), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were tested at day 0 and 21 as the secondary outcomes.  (1) Two patients in the intervention group and four patients in the control group were lost upon follow-up. (2) PLT count: there was no significant difference in PLT count between the two groups from baseline (day 0), day 7, and day 14. At day 21, the intervention group indicated an upward trend of PLT count with a statistically significant difference than that of the control group ( < 0.05). (3) NSCLC: there was significant difference in PLT count between the two groups on day 21 ( < 0.01). (4) Gastric cancer: there was no significant difference in PLT count between the two groups during this trial ( > 0.05). (5) There was no statistically significant difference between the intervention group and the control group with the safety figures (secondary outcomes) RBC, HGB, WBC, NE#, AST, ALT, LDH, CK, Cr, and BUN measured ( > 0.05). (6) Adverse events: one gastric cancer patient in the control group was diagnosed with gastrointestinal bleeding on day 3.  In conclusion,  injections may provide a safe and effective option for CIT in patients with NSCLC.

Chinese Herbal Medicine () Injections for Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia: A Randomized, Controlled, Multicenter Clinical Trial.

Shenqi Fuzheng Injection (SFI) is a traditional Chinese medicine injection with anticancer properties and is mainly composed of ginseng and astragalus. Its efficacy has been confirmed in clinical trials, but the mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the effect of SFI on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells and identified its possible mechanism of synergistic effects when combined with the chemotherapeutic drug interferon (IFN-) . An MTT assay was used to measure the inhibition effects of low-dose IFN- (6000 IU) with or without SFI (0.5 g/L) on the HCC cell line MHCC97. VEGF-silenced MHCC97L-mir200 cell lines were prepared using lentiviral vectors and evaluated by real-time PCR to determine the inhibition effect. We examined MHCC97L-mir200 and MHCC97L cells by MTT assay, using IFN- alone or in combination with SFI. The inhibition ratio of IFN- (6000 IU) was -29.5%, while that for IFN- (6000 IU) + SFI (0.5 g/L) was 17.0%, which was significantly higher than that for the IFN- group (P < 0.01). The VEGF gene was silenced successfully in MHCC97-L cells. After interference of VEGF, the inhibition by SFI and IFN- in MHCC97L-mir200 did not differ from that in MHCC97-L cells (P > 0.05). SFI can reduce the expression of VEGF in HCC, which can increase the efficacy of IFN-, providing a theoretical basis for clinical application.

Shenqi Fuzheng Injection (SFI) Enhances IFN- Inhibitory Effect on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells by Reducing VEGF Expression: Validation by Gene Silencing Technique.

The immunological tumour microenvironment (TME) has occupied a very important position in the beginning and progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains poor for the local progression and widely metastases at the time of clinical diagnosis. Our objective is to identify a potential signature model to improve prognosis of LUAD.

Identification of an immune prognostic 11-gene signature for lung adenocarcinoma.

Derived neutrophil-to-lymphocytes ratio (dNLR) has recently been reported as a novel potential biomarker associated with prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, evidence for the prognostic utility of dNLR in patients with NSCLC treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) remains inconsistent. The objective of this work was to evaluate the association between pretreatment dNLR and prognosis of patients with NSCLC treated with ICIs.

Prognostic value of derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors: a meta-analysis.

The hilly region in eastern Guangdong, China lacks comprehensive scientific investigations for decades, especially in terms of herpetofauna. In recent years, several highly threatened amphibians have been gradually discovered from this region. In this work, three new species of the genus Boulenophrys are described, which are endemic from only one or two known localities in eastern Guangdong. These discoveries enrich the diversity of Boulenophrys in eastern Guangdong. With the large number of threatened urodeles and anuran species occurring in this densely populated area, the unique herpetological diversity in eastern Guangdong is facing the impacts of habitat degradation and fragmentation, and conservation actions are urgently required.
