The 2020 interview cycle for cardiothoracic fellowships was affected by the coronavirus-19 pandemic. Many programs shifted from in-person to virtual interviews. We evaluated applicant perceptions of the various formats.

Interviews During the Pandemic: A Thoracic Education Cooperative Group and Surgery Residents Project.

Acute aortic syndromes (AASs) are prone to misdiagnosis by facilities with limited diagnostic experience. We assessed long-term trends in misdiagnosis among patients transferred to a tertiary care facility with presumed AASs.

Applicant perception of virtual interviews in cardiothoracic surgery: A Thoracic Education Cooperative Group Study.

A large patent ductus arteriosus is an uncommon discovery in an adult. A 2.7-cm patent ductus arteriosus was found in a 31-year-old man with heart failure symptoms. Owing to the size, an occluder device failed to prevent left-to-right shunting, and consideration was given for alternatives to percutaneous closure, including traditional open repair vs thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). After a left carotid-subclavian artery bypass was performed, the patient underwent a zone 2 deployment of TEVAR graft. TEVAR exclusion is a useful technique in adults, particularly in the setting of a large or calcified ductus.

Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) has been increasingly used in lieu of general anesthesia (GA) for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We sought to compare outcomes and in-hospital costs between MAC and GA for TAVR at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Never too early: the impact of a shadowing programme in paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery for undergraduate college students.

There are several transitions that must be made to define your new role as an attending surgeon. Establishing these transitions can be difficult but trying to promote yourself while undergoing these awkward transitions can be taxing but nevertheless crucial. Whether you are in private practice trying to obtain referrals to build your practice or in an academic setting where you are trying to find your niche, promoting yourself along the way is imperative for your future growth. There are 3 core transitions in the first 5 years: (1) clinical, (2) professional, and (3) personal.

Diversity in the physician workforce improves patient care, physician well-being, and innovation. Workforce diversity is dependent on fair compensation that is unbiased by race or ethnicity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a disparity of representation and salary on the basis of race or ethnicity exists in academic cardiothoracic surgery.

A Report of Salaries of Academic Cardiothoracic Surgeons Based on Race and Ethnicity.

Application costs are known for other competitive surgical subspecialties but not for integrated thoracic surgery residency (I6). We sought to quantify I6 application costs, assess the value of away rotations and geographic connections, and identify characteristics of matched applicants.

Applying to Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency: A Survey-Based Cost Analysis.

Transvenous cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) lead extraction (TLE) is susceptible to superior vena cava (SVC) injury and can be performed in the operating room (OR) or electrophysiology lab via a mechanical device or laser-powered extraction. This study reflects a contemporary experience of mechanical right-left rotational extraction by cardiac surgeons in the OR.
