Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic and low-grade inflammatory disease most commonly found in pregnant women with high body mass index and non-Caucasian ethnicities; however, not all women of high-risk groups develop GDM. We hypothesized that regulatory T cells (Tregs) might present a role in suppressing GDM development. To this end, 55 high-risk women at early pregnancy (first trimester) were recruited, and 21 of them developed GDM while the other 34 did not. Compared to those subjects who did not develop GDM (non-GDM), the patients who developed GDM presented reduced levels of Tregs and elevated levels of serum interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). The Tregs in the GDM group also presented reduced levels of transforming growth factor beta and IL-10, compared with the non-GDM group. The frequency of circulating Tregs and serum TNF-alpha level were inversely correlated. In addition, addition of Tregs from non-GDM patients, but not those from GDM patients, significantly suppressed the interferon gamma and TNF-alpha production by effector T cells through IL-10-mediated mechanisms, suggesting a functional defect in Tregs from GDM subjects. Together, these data indicated that the presence of functional Tregs could protect the pregnant women from GDM development by suppressing pro-inflammatory responses and that the dysregulation of Tregs early in pregnancy elevated the risk of GDM.

Functional Defects of Regulatory T Cell Through Interleukin 10 Mediated Mechanism in the Induction of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, imposing an enormous economic burden on individuals and human society. Laboratory studies have identified several drugs that target mitophagy for the prevention and treatment of CVD. Only a few of these drugs have been successful in clinical trials, and most studies have been limited to animal and cellular models. Furthermore, conventional drugs used to treat CVD, such as antiplatelet agents, statins, and diuretics, often result in adverse effects on patients' cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory systems. In contrast, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has gained significant attention for its unique theoretical basis and clinical efficacy in treating CVD.

Traditional Chinese medicine and mitophagy: A novel approach for cardiovascular disease management.

Porphyra yezoensis, an important medicinal seaweed extensively cultivated and consumed in China, Japan, and South Korea, is traditionally considered a precious healthy food and food additive. Published studies showed that the polysaccharides are major bioactive macromolecules from P. yezoensis with great potential for the development of nutraceuticals and functional foods. As an important component of P. yezoensis, P. yezoensis polysaccharide (PYP) is mainly extracted by hot water extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction methods. Subsequently obtained by decolorization, deproteinization, removal of other small molecules, and separation on various chromatographic columns. The main structural components of PYP were (1 → 3)-linked β-D-galactose and (1 → 4)-linked 3,6-anhydro-α-L-galactose. Accumulating evidence has revealed that PYP has diverse biological activities, such as antioxidant, suppressing kidney stones, immunomodulatory, etc. This review systematically summarizes the recent preparation progress, chemical structures, bioactivities, and the underlying mechanisms of PYP. Information from this review provides insights into the further development of PYP as therapeutic agents and functional foods. Although there have been extensive studies on PYP, there are gaps in establishing quality standard, toxicological research, clinical application and other aspects. To enhance the utility of P. yezoensis, it is necessary to strengthen the research on these aspects.

Extraction, structural features, and pharmacological effects of the polysaccharides from Porphyra yezoensis: A review.

Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX) is the dried root rhizomes of the plant Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. of the family Umbelliferae. CX is listed as a superior herb in the book "Shennong Bencao Jing". It has a pungent and warm nature and belongs to the liver, gallbladder, and pericardium meridians. CX is documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia from 1963 to 2020 editions. CX as a well-known traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation, regulating qi, dispelling wind, and relieving pain, has been proven to contain a variety of bioactive compounds with diverse pharmacological activities and medicinal value.

Ethnobotanical usages, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and quality control of chuanxiong rhizoma: A review.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a prevalent disease with high mortality rates worldwide. The course of MI is intricate and variable, necessitating personalized treatment strategies based on different mechanisms. However, variety of postoperative complications and rejections, such as heart failure, arrhythmias, cardiac rupture, and left ventricular thrombus, contribute to a poor prognosis. Despite the inclusion of antiplatelet agents and statins in the conventional treatment regimen, their clinical applicability is constrained by potential adverse effects and limited efficacy. Additionally, the mechanisms leading to MI are complex and diverse. Therefore, the development of novel compounds for MI treatment. The use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including MI, is grounded in its profound historical background, comprehensive theoretical system, and accumulated knowledge. An increasing number of contemporary evidence-based medical studies have demonstrated that TCM plays a significant role in alleviating symptoms and improving the quality of life for MI patients. Chinese herbal formulations and active ingredients can intervene in the pathological process of MI through key factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, myocardial fibrosis, angiogenesis, and autophagy. This article critically reviews existing herbal formulations from an evidence-based medicine perspective, evaluating their research status and potential clinical applications. Additionally, it explores recent advancements in the use of herbal medicines and their components for the prevention and treatment of MI, offering detailed insights into their mechanisms of action.

Therapeutic Potential of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Underlying Mechanism for the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) exert their pharmacological functions by serving as sponges for related microRNAs (miRNAs), thereby modulating gene expression. Nevertheless, the regulatory roles of the lncRNA-mediated competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) mechanism in the interplay between burns and keloids remain largely elusive.
