Recent studies have significantly expanded our knowledge of viral diversity and functions in the environment. Exploring the ecological relationships between viruses, hosts, and the environment is a crucial first step towards a deeper understanding of the complex and dynamic interplays among them.

Depth-related variability in viral communities in highly stratified sulfidic mine tailings.

In this study, novel bioavailable selenium nanoparticles with controllable particle size and low toxicity were developed. With selenium modified zein nanoparticles (zein NPs) in-situ, dispersed nano-selenium particles with different structure were formed simultaneously. The particle size, zeta potential, morphology and binding mechanism of synthesized zein-selenium nanoparticles (zein-Se NPs) were systematically discussed. Selenium was considered to be combined with OH and -CO-NH- groups of zein. The selenium in the complex particles presented an amorphous structure with zero valence. The cytotoxicity of zein-Se NPs was significantly lower than that of sodium selenite, even exhibited a growth-promoting effect on normal liver cells (L-02), and were proven to be orally absorbed by organisms in vivo experiments. The difference in particle structure had certain effects on cytotoxicity and oral targeting. The complex particles obtained by this method were anticipated be further used as food fortifiers or medicines.

Fabrication of food grade zein-dispersed selenium dual-nanoparticles with controllable size, cell friendliness and oral bioavailability.

The transcriptional co-activator Yes-associated protein (YAP) functions as a downstream effector of the Hippo signaling pathway and plays a crucial role in cardiomyocyte survival. In its non-phosphorylated activated state, YAP binds to transcription factors, activating the transcription of downstream target genes. It also regulates cell proliferation and survival by selectively binding to enhancers and activating target genes. However, the upregulation of the Hippo pathway in human heart failure inhibits cardiac regeneration and disrupts astrogenesis, thus preventing the nuclear translocation of YAP. Existing literature indicates that the Hippo/YAP axis contributes to inflammation and fibrosis, potentially playing a role in the development of cardiac, vascular and renal injuries. Moreover, it is a key mediator of myofibroblast differentiation and fibrosis in the infarcted heart. Given these insights, can we harness YAP's regenerative potential in a targeted manner? In this review, we provide a detailed discussion of the Hippo signaling pathway and consolidate concepts for the development and intervention of cardiac anti-aging drugs to leverage YAP signaling as a pivotal target.

An updated review of YAP: A promising therapeutic target against cardiac aging?

The scientific diagnosis and treatment of patients with diabetes require frequent blood glucose testing and insulin delivery to normoglycemia. Therefore, an artificial pancreas with a continuous blood glucose (BG) monitoring function is an urgent research target in the medical industry. The problem of closed-loop algorithmic control of the BG with a time delay is a key and difficult issue that needs to be overcome in the development of an artificial pancreas. Firstly, the composition, structure, and control characteristics of the artificial pancreas are introduced. Subsequently, the research progress of artificial pancreas control algorithms is reviewed, and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of proportional-integral-differential control, model predictive control, and artificial intelligence control are compared and analyzed to determine whether they are suitable for the practical application of the artificial pancreas. Additionally, key advancements in areas such as blood glucose data monitoring, adaptive models, wearable devices, and fully automated artificial pancreas systems are also reviewed. Finally, this review highlights that meal prediction, control safety, integration, streamlining the optimization of control algorithms, constant temperature preservation of insulin, and dual-hormone artificial pancreas are issues that require further attention in the future.

Recent advances in the precision control strategy of artificial pancreas.

Doxorubicin (DOX) possesses strong anti-tumor effects but is limited by its irreversible cardiac toxicity. The relationship between exercise, a known enhancer of cardiovascular health, and DOX-induced cardiotoxicity has been a focus of recent research. Exercise has been suggested to mitigate DOX's cardiac harm by modulating the Yes-associated protein (YAP) and Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathways, which are crucial in regulating cardiac cell functions and responses to damage. This study aimed to assess the protective role of exercise preconditioning against DOX-induced cardiac injury. We used Sprague-Dawley rats, divided into five groups (control, DOX, exercise preconditioning (EP), EP-DOX, and verteporfin + EP + DOX), to investigate the potential mechanisms. Our findings, including echocardiography, histological staining, Western blot, and q-PCR analysis, demonstrated that exercise preconditioning could alleviate DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction and structural damage. Notably, exercise preconditioning enhanced the nuclear localization and co-localization of YAP and STAT3. Our study suggests that exercise preconditioning may counteract DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by activating the YAP/STAT3 pathway, highlighting a potential therapeutic approach for reducing DOX's cardiac side effects.

The Best Exercise Modality and Dose to Reduce Glycosylated Hemoglobin in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review with Pairwise, Network, and Dose-Response Meta-Analyses.

Candidate bacterial phylum CSP1-3 has not been cultivated and is poorly understood. Here, we analyzed 112 CSP1-3 metagenome-assembled genomes and showed they are likely facultative anaerobes, with 3 of 5 families encoding autotrophy through the reductive glycine pathway (RGP), Wood-Ljungdahl pathway (WLP) or Calvin-Benson-Bassham (CBB), with hydrogen or sulfide as electron donors. Chemoautotrophic enrichments from hot spring sediments and fluorescence  hybridization revealed enrichment of six CSP1-3 genera, and both transcribed genes and DNA-stable isotope probing were consistent with proposed chemoautotrophic metabolisms. Ancestral state reconstructions showed that the ancestors of phylum CSP1-3 may have been acetogens that were autotrophic via the RGP, whereas the WLP and CBB were acquired by horizontal gene transfer. Our results reveal that CSP1-3 is a widely distributed phylum with the potential to contribute to the cycling of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen. The name  phy. nov. is proposed.

Insights into chemoautotrophic traits of a prevalent bacterial phylum CSP1-3, herein .

In order to further improve the injection precision of the PH300 insulin pump, this paper optimizes and improves the mechanical structure and control algorithm of the PH300. The improved PH300 uses a proportional-integral-derivative controller based on back propagation neural network (BP-PID) algorithm to control operation, and the experimental results show that the minimum effective single infusion dose of the improved PH300 is 0.047 U, which is reduced by 50.52%. The deviation reduction of low-dose infusion (0.1U-0.9U) ranged from 1.47% to 10.87%, with a mean of 4.91%. The mean deviation of the improved PH300 decreases by 12.85% after a 24h low basal rate (0.5U/h) injection. In addition, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) was used to predict the deviation during injection, and the predicted values were uniformly compensated for in subsequent injection experiments. The LSTM model performed best with a training set of 85%, a test set of 15%, an epoch of 300, a batch number of 256, and 32 hidden layer neurons. After compensation, the mean infusion deviation for large doses was reduced by 12.05%, and the maximum deviation by 14.12%.
