Organic phase change material (PCM) with macro-encapsulation is attractive in energy storage applications as it has relatively low cost. This study focuses on using PET plastic pipes to encapsulate paraffin and using low-cost float stones to increase the thermal conductivity of PCM modules as they have a special structure of high porosity. Float stones were immersed in the liquid PCM and an ultrasonic welding method used to prevent leakage of the PET plastic pipes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to discover the appearance of the composite PCM. The thermal performance of the PCM cylinder module was analyzed through experimental tests of a constant-temperature water bath and numerical simulations. The result indicates that this PCM Ccylinder module is superior in thermal energy storage compared with the reference module even though fewer PCM was contained and the latent heat loss is considerable. The pipe diameter is an important parameter when using this kind of PCM cylinder module in water tanks.

Macro-Encapsulated PCM Cylinder Module Based on Paraffin and Float Stones.

The ventilation modalities in most Chinese residences are infiltration and opening windows. We measured infiltration rates and air change rates at night, with no attempt to change occupants' behaviors, of urban residences in five climate zones of China during four seasons. Using the CO decay method, we found the median infiltration rate for 294 residences to be 0.34 h . Using occupant-generated CO as tracer gas, we determined air change rates over the course of 1 year in 46 bedrooms at night from mass balance considerations. In 54% of the measurements, windows were closed, so ventilation was only by infiltration. Windows were mainly closed when the outdoor temperature was below 15°C and above 26°C. The median infiltration rates did not differ appreciably among seasons and climate zones and were always less than 0.45 h .

Air change rates in urban Chinese bedrooms.

Predicting influence of human thermal plume on the diffusion of respiration-produced particles is an important issue for improving indoor air quality through eliminating infectious microbes efficiently. In this study, the Large Eddy Simulation was utilized to predict the effects of thermal plume of different intensities on particle diffusion. Three postures of the human body model and three room temperatures were considered. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficient on the surface of the human body varies greatly with different postures. The coefficient is the largest when the model is in sitting posture, leading to the greatest heat transfer rate. Meanwhile, the thermal plume generated by bending the thigh increases the size of the facial thermal plume in horizon direction. The increase of the difference between indoor temperature and skin temperature causes an increase of the convective heat transfer of the manikin, leading to stronger airflow in front of the face. The thicker and faster the human thermal plume is, the more difficult it is penetrated by aerosols produced by nasal breathing, finally resulting in most particles distributed within 0.2 m thick under the roof.

The indoor environment influences occupants' health. From March 1, 2018, to February 28, 2019, we continuously monitored indoor temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and CO concentration in bedrooms via an online system in 165 residences that covered all five climate zones of China. Meanwhile, we asked one specific occupant in each home to complete questionnaires about perceived air quality and sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms at the end of each month. Higher CO concentration was significantly associated with a higher percentage of perceived stuffy odor and skin SBS symptoms. Higher relative humidity was associated with higher percentage of perceived moldy odor and humid air, while lower RH was associated with a higher percentage of perceived dry air. Occupants who lived in residences with high RH were less likely to have mucosal and skin SBS symptoms (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 0.73-0.78). However, the benefit of high humidity for perceived dry air and skin dryness symptoms is weaker if there is a high CO concentration level.

Associations of indoor carbon dioxide concentrations, air temperature, and humidity with perceived air quality and sick building syndrome symptoms in Chinese homes.

Residents tend to close the doors and windows of their residential kitchens in severe cold conditions, making insufficient outdoor air supply and aggravating indoor air pollution. In order to understand the ventilation and pollution status of the residential kitchens in a severe cold region and improve the ventilation system, this study used questionnaires, on-site tests, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to analyze a pollution and ventilation case in Shenyang, China. The method of using ceiling openings to compensate for outdoor air supply was proposed and optimized to improve air distribution in the residential kitchen. The average CO concentration in the breathing region, air velocity, and temperature levels in the kitchen, before and after the improvement, were compared. The results indicated that the kitchen pollution in severe cold area of Shenyang is serious, and the ventilation habit has regional characteristics. Furthermore, the overall kitchen environment including air velocity, temperature, pollutant levels, static pressure, CO concentration, indoor airflow fluctuation, and cooking fire were obviously improved for the ceiling make-up air cases. The static pressure, CO concentration, indoor airflow fluctuation, and cooking fire showed remarkable improvement in the residential kitchens. These findings provide a basis for improving the reasonable air distribution of residential kitchens in cold regions and for building a thermally comfortable environment.

Ventilation status of the residential kitchens in severe cold region and improvement based on simulation: A case of Shenyang, China.

Data center is a very important infrastructure to support the development of information technology, and its development and increment are very remarkable. However, with the rapid and large-scale development of data centers, the problem of energy consumption turns to be also very prominent. Under the background of global carbon peak and carbon neutrality, developing green and low-carbon data centers has become an inevitable trend. This paper reviews and analyzes the policies and their roles in promoting China's green development of data centers in the past 10 years, summarizes the current situation of the implementation of green data center projects in China and gives the changes of PUE limits of data centers under the policy constraints. Application of green technologies is an important measure for energy-saving and low-carbon development of data centers, so encouraging innovation and application of green technologies in data center is also a priority task in relevant policies. This paper points out the green and low-carbon technology system of data centers, further summarizes energy-saving and carbon-reducing technologies in IT equipment, cooling system, power supply and distribution system, lighting, intelligent operation and maintenance, and provides an outlook on the future green development of data centers.
