Maleic anhydride (MAH) was used as the grafting monomer, which was prepared by melt grafting reaction in the twin screw extruder with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as the initiator, polylactic acid grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH-g-PLA) was successfully prepared as the interface compatibilizer. The PLA/Wood fiber/MAH-g-PLA composites were prepared by melt blending and injection molding with different proportions of compatibilizer added, within which PLA was for the matrix phase and wood fiber was for the reinforcing phase. The crystallinity, microstructure, thermal stability and dynamic thermomechanical property of the composites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA). Furthermore, the mechanical and water absorption properties of the composites were also characterized. Results showed that the tensile strength and flexural strength of the composites attained the highest at 30% MAH-g-PLA added, where the crystallinity of the composites also showed the highest value. DMA results showed that the addition of MAH-g-PLA interfacial compatibilizer increased the loss modulus of the composites and improved the toughness. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that when the MAH-g-PLA was used, wood fiber is well dispersed in the PLA matrix phase, and that the interfacial compatibility between the matrix and the enhanced phase was improved. Therefore, the addition of MAH-g-PLA could improve the interfacial compatibility of PLA/Wood fiber composites and improve the mechanical properties of the composites.

Effect of MAH-g-PLA on the Properties of Wood Fiber/Polylactic Acid Composites.

Starch-based wood adhesives are widely used as environmentally friendly and formaldehyde-free alternatives in the manufacturing of wood products. However, their poor water resistance and inability to inhibit bacterial/fungal growth limit their practicality. To address this issue, a physicochemical double-crosslinked network structure between citric acid, starch, and wood was prepared in this study by physically entangling the wood structure and chemically crosslinking the starch molecules, with citric acid preventing the activity of various enzymes and denatured proteins within microbial cells, thereby inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth. In water resistance cycling tests, the resulting esterified starch plywood demonstrated a 47.6 % and 13.2 % increase in water resistance compared with starch plywood and commercially available phenolic resin plywood, respectively. In addition, the tighter intermolecular bonding in the crosslinked structure results in a 31 % increase in heat resistance. The physical "nailing" and chemical crosslinking between the adhesive and the wood improved considerably the bonding strength to 98.36 %. The dual role of the physicochemical crosslinking of starch adhesives provides a straightforward strategy for the preparation of inexpensive, water-resistant, and fungal/bacterial-resistant starch adhesives, thus contributing to the promotion of starch adhesives.

Preparation of high-performance antibacterial/antifungal citric acid-starch adhesives based on physical entanglement and chemical crosslinking.

The generation of negative air ions (NAI) by furniture contributes to indoor air purification and enhances the living environment. However, commercially available furniture typically relies on surface coatings to release NAI. Over time, the degradation of these coatings leads to a significant decline in NAI release performance, presenting a persistent challenge for sustained effectiveness. Here, a novel sustainable wood-based negative air anion generator (SWNG) had been developed, utilizing a cellulose framework as the substrate. The in-situ synthesis of polylactic acid (PLA) within the wood incorporated titanium dioxide (TiO), tourmaline (TL), and cellulose acetate, firmly anchoring these materials within the wood structure. Compared to the cellulose framework alone, the NAI production of the SWNG had increased by 406.67 %. The impregnation with PLA enhanced the enduring photocatalytic activity of TiO and TL in this innovative wooden NAI generator. After undergoing 200 cycles of testing between -40 °C and 50 °C, it continued to sustain NAI production, demonstrating exceptional antibacterial performance. Overall, this study introduced a novel sustainable wood-based negative air ion generator as a highly stable material with sustainable properties, offering significant potential for applications in improving indoor air quality and in the domain of home construction.
