The pre-eclampsia is characterized by placental defective angiogenesis and maternal vascular/endothelial dysfunction. Recently, the decrease and senescence of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) has been observed in maternal circulation with pre-eclampsia. Given the essential involvement of EPC in neovascularization and reendothelialization, we investigate whether or not the depletion of EPC is existent in placental/fetal circulation with maternal pre-eclampsia.

It is essential to construct structural health monitoring systems for large important bridges. Zhijiang Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that was built recently over the Hangzhou Qiantang River (the largest river in Zhejiang Province). The length of Zhijiang Bridge is 478 m, which comprises an arched twin-tower space and a twin-cable plane structure. As an example, the present study describes the integrated system of structural health monitoring and intelligent management for Zhijiang Bridge, which comprises an information acquisition system, data management system, evaluation and decision-making system, and application service system. The monitoring components include the working environment of the bridge and various factors that affect bridge safety, such as the stress and strain of the main bridge structure, vibration, cable force, temperature, and wind speed. In addition, the integrated system includes a forecasting and decision-making module for real-time online evaluation, which provides warnings and makes decisions based on the monitoring information. From this, the monitoring information, evaluation results, maintenance decisions, and warning information can be input simultaneously into the bridge monitoring center and traffic emergency center to share the monitoring data, thereby facilitating evaluations and decision making using the system.

Integrated system of structural health monitoring and intelligent management for a cable-stayed bridge.

Recent progress in the field of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) significantly enhances the potential for practical use of this remarkable class of material in advanced electronic and sensor devices. One of the most daunting challenges is in creating large-area, perfectly aligned arrays of purely semiconducting SWNTs (s-SWNTs). Here we introduce a simple, scalable, large-area scheme that achieves this goal through microwave irradiation of aligned SWNTs grown on quartz substrates. Microstrip dipole antennas of low work-function metals concentrate the microwaves and selectively couple them into only the metallic SWNTs (m-SWNTs). The result allows for complete removal of all m-SWNTs, as revealed through systematic experimental and computational studies of the process. As one demonstration of the effectiveness, implementing this method on large arrays consisting of ~20,000 SWNTs completely removes all of the m-SWNTs (~7,000) to yield a purity of s-SWNTs that corresponds, quantitatively, to at least to 99.9925% and likely significantly higher. 

Microwave purification of large-area horizontally aligned arrays of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

In this study, the scope of CFRP cables in cable-stayed bridges is studied by establishing a numerical model of a 1400-m span of the same. The mechanical properties and characteristics of CFRP stay cables and of a cable-stayed bridge with CFRP cables are here subjected to comprehensive analysis. The anomalies in the damping properties of free vibration, nonlinear parametric vibration and wind fluctuating vibration between steel cables and CFRP cables are determined. The structural stiffness, wind resistance and traffic vibration of the cable-stayed bridge with CFRP cables are also analyzed. It was found that the static performances of a cable-stayed bridge with CFRP cables and steel cables are basically the same. The natural frequencies of CFRP cables do not coincide with the major natural frequencies of the cable-stayed bridge, so the likelihood of CFRP cable-bridge coupling vibration is minuscule. For CFRP cables, the response amplitudes of both parametric vibration and wind fluctuating vibration are smaller than those of steel cables. It can be concluded from the research that the use of CFRP cables does not change the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle-bridge coupling vibration. Therefore, they can be used in long-span cable-stayed bridges with an excellent mechanical performance.

Static and Dynamic Characteristics of a Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridge with CFRP Cables.

The cyclic void growth model (CVGM) is a micro-mechanical fracture model that has been used to assess ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) of steel structures in recent years. However, owing to the stress triaxiality range and contingency of experimental results, low goodness of fit is sometimes obtained when calibrating the model damage degradation parameter, resulting in poor prediction. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of the CVGM model, a model parameter calibration method is proposed. In the research presented in this paper, tests were conducted on circular notched specimens that provided different magnitudes of stress triaxiality. The comparative analysis was carried out between experimental results and predicted results. The results indicate that the number of cycles and the equivalent plastic strain to ULCF fracture initiation by the CVGM model calibrated by the proposed method agree well with the experimental results. The proposed parameter calibration method greatly improves prediction accuracy compared to the previous method.

Improvement of Cyclic Void Growth Model for Ultra-Low Cycle Fatigue Prediction of Steel Bridge Piers.

Pediatricians and pediatric endocrinologists utilize Bone Age Assessment (BAA) for in-vestigations pertaining to genetic disorders, hormonal complications and abnormalities in the skeletal system maturity of children. Conventional methods dating back to 1950 were often tedious and suscep-tible to inter-observer variability, and preceding attempts to improve these traditional techniques have inadequately addressed the human expert inter-observer variability so as to significantly refine bone age evaluations. In this paper, an automated and efficient approach with regression convolutional neu-ral network is proposed. This approach automatically exploits the carpal bones as the region of interest (ROI) and performs boundary extraction of carpal bones, then based on the regression convolutional neural network it evaluates the skeletal age from the left hand wrist radiograph of young children. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves an average discrepancy of 2.75 months between clinical and automatic bone age evaluations, and achieves 90.15% accuracy within 6 months from the ground truth for male. Further experimental results with test radiographs assigned an accuracy within 1 year achieved 99.43% accuracy.

Skeletal bone age assessments for young children based on regression convolutional neural networks.

Based on the continuum damage mechanics model (CDM) for monotonic tension, a new CDM for ultra-low-cycle fatigue (ULCF) is put forward to predict ULCF damage of steel and its weld joint under strong earthquakes. The base metal, heat-affected zone and weld metal of Q345qC steel were considered as research objects, and the uniaxial plastic strain threshold of the CDM model was calibrated via tensile testing combined with finite element analysis of notched round bar specimens. ULCF tests of the base metal and weld specimens were carried out to analyse their fatigue life, fracture life and post-fracture path. Based on the calibrated uniaxial plastic strain threshold, the finite element models of base metal and weld specimens suitable for CDM model were established by ABAQUS. The calibration results of material parameters show that the weld metal has the lowest plastic strain threshold and the largest dispersion coefficient at the plastic strain threshold. Prediction results under cyclic loading with a large strain were compared with experimental values, and results showed that the predicted crack initiation and fracture lives of the base metal and weld specimens are lower than their corresponding experimental values. The predicted errors of crack initiation life and fracture life decrease with increasing strain level. The development law of the damage variable reveals exponential growth combined with a stepped pattern. The CDM model can also accurately predict the number of cycles to initial damage. Taking the results together, the CDM of the ULCF of the base metal and weld specimens could successfully predict post-fracture paths.

Prediction of the Ultra-Low-Cycle Fatigue Damage of Q345qC Steel and its Weld Joint.

Breast cancer is currently one of the most common malignant tumors in women. Our previous research found that thymic dysfunction has a certain relationship with the occurrence and development of breast cancer. In order to explore whether the functional status of thymus is related to the development and metastasis of breast cancer, we use BALB/c wild type mice (BALB wt), BALB/c nude mice (BALB nu), BALB wt mice implanted with 4T1 cells (wt 4T1), BALB nu with 4T1 (nu 4T1), D-galactose treatment wt 4T1 mice (D-Gal), Thymalfasin treatment wt 4T1 mice (Tα1), Cyclophosphamide treatment wt 4T1 mice (CTX), Doxorubicin treatment wt 4T1 mice (Dox) in the research. As a result, nu 4T1, D-Gal and DOX had earlier lung metastases. Gene chip results showed that PTMα and Tβ15b1 were the most up-regulated and down-regulated genes in thymosin-related genes, respectively. Overexpression or silencing of PTMα and Tβ15b1 genes did not affect the proliferation of 4T1 cells. PTMα gene silenced, cell migration and invasion ability enhanced, while PTMα gene overexpression, the cell invasion ability weaken. In vivo, PTMα gene overexpression promotes tumor growth and lung metastasis in the early stage, but has no significant effect in the later stage. Tβ15b1 overexpression also promotes tumor growth in the early stage, but suppresses in the later stage. Tβ15b1 gene silencing inhibits tumor lung metastasis. Thus, our findings demonstrated that thymic function affects breast cancer development and metastasis by regulating expression of thymus secretions PTMα and Tβ15b1. Our study provided new directions for breast cancer therapy.

Corrosion is a common form of durability degradation of steel bridges. Corrosion morphology affects stress distribution under cyclic loads and causes strain concentrations in pits, thus affecting the mechanical properties of steel structures, including ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF). To precisely simulate corrosion morphology and investigate the ULCF failure mechanism of corroded steel piers, a sculpting method was applied to mesh units using three-dimensional surface morphology data of corroded steel specimens. Moreover, the ULCF crack-initiation life was numerically predicted using the finite element model based on the cyclic void growth model (CVGM). The cumulative equivalent plastic strain, cyclic void growth index, and critical void growth index of corroded steel piers with different corroded morphologies were compared. Results reveal that, regardless of whether the pier is corroded, fatigue cracks tend to initiate at the weld toe at corners when exposed to cyclic loads under an oblique direction at the pier top. Additionally, the ULCF crack-initiation life in a corroded pier is less than that in an uncorroded pier, and it is significantly affected by a reduction in the pier wall thickness. Corrosion pits affect the position of ULCF crack initiation in a steel pier and cracks tend to initiate at the bottom of pits with large depth-to-diameter ratios. In the case of minor corrosion, the corrosion morphology affects the seismic performance of piers to a small extent.

Effect of Corroded Surface Morphology on Ultra-Low Cycle Fatigue of Steel Bridge Piers.

Orthotropic steel decks are widely used in the construction of steel bridges. Although there are many fatigue-evaluation methods stipulated by codes, unexpected fatigue cracks are still detected in some bridges. To justify whether the local finite element model commonly used in fatigue investigations on orthotropic decks can correctly instruct engineering practices, the Arlequin framework is applied in this paper to determine the full fatigue stress under traffic loads. The convergence on and validity of this application for orthotropic decks are checked. Results show that the Arlequin model for deck-fatigue analysis established in this paper tends to be an efficient method for complete fatigue stress acquisition, whereby the vulnerable sites of orthotropic steel decks under traffic loads are defined. Vehicles near the flexible components, such as hangers or cables, can have adverse effects on the fatigue durability of decks. Additionally, the total number of vehicles and their arrangement concentration also affect fatigue performance. Complex traffic conditions cannot be fully loaded in local models. Regardless of the gross bridge mechanics and deck deformation, the fatigue stress range is underestimated by about 30-40%. Such a difference in fatigue assessment seems to explain the premature cracks observed in orthotropic steel decks.

Investigation of the Fatigue Stress of Orthotropic Steel Decks Based on an Arch Bridge with the Application of the Arlequin Method.

Under strong earthquakes, steel structures are prone to undergoing ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) fracture after sustaining cyclic large-strain loading, leading to severe earthquake-induced damage. Thus, establishing a prediction method for ULCF plays a significant role in the seismic design of steel structures. However, a simple and feasible model for predicting the ULCF life of steel structures has not been recognized yet. Among existing models, the ductile fracture model based on ductility capacity consumption has the advantage of strong adaptability, while the loading history effect in the damage process can also be considered. Nevertheless, such models have too many parameters and are inconvenient for calibration and application. To this end, focusing on the prediction methods for ULCF damage in steel structures, with the fragile parts being in moderate and high stress triaxiality, this paper proposes a simplified uncoupled prediction model that considers the effect of stress triaxiality on damage and introduces a new historical-effect related variable function reducing the calibration work of model parameters. Finally, cyclic loading test results of circular notched specimens verify that the proposed model has the advantages of a small dispersion of parameters for calibration, being handy for application, and possessing reliable results, providing a prediction method for ULCF damage of structural steels.

A Simplified Ductile Fracture Model for Predicting Ultra-Low Cycle Fatigue of Structural Steels.

The thymus is the most sensitive organ under various pathophysiological conditions, such as aging, starvation, and infection. As a key stromal cell for T cell development, it is well-known that thymic epithelial cells (TECs) play an important role in the thymus response to the external environment. Thymosin beta 15 (Tβ15) is a G-actin binding protein secreted by TECs, it plays an important role in maintaining the dynamic balance of actin, angiogenesis, axonal formation, and wound healing, but the relationship between Tβ15 and TECs is not clear yet. Here, we show the impact of Tβ15 on the TEC's spatial development, as well as the T-cell differentiation and thymic output. As a result, TEC is the main effector cell of Tβ15 in the thymus. Tβ15 OX inhibits the chemotaxis of TECs to the medulla and subsequently blocks the positive selection of thymocytes from CD3TCRβCD4CD8 double positive cells to CD3TCRβCD4CD8 single-positive (CD4SP) cells. Tβ15-knockdown accelerates the reticular differentiation of astral TECs and medullary TECs. Importantly, mice implanted with Tβ15-knockdown iTECs show high thymic output but low peripheral T cell maturity and activity. In a word, our results explain the role of Tβ15 on the differentiation and function of TECs and provide a new perspective for understanding the process of thymus development and degeneration.

Thymosin Beta 15 Alters the Spatial Development of Thymic Epithelial Cells.

Tumor-treating fields (TTFields) is a novel treatment modality for malignant solid tumors, often employing electric field simulations to analyze the distribution of electric fields on the tumor under different parameters of TTFields. Due to the present difficulties and high costs associated with reproducing or implementing the simulation model construction techniques, this study used readily available open-source software tools to construct a highly accurate, easily implementable finite element simulation model for TTFields. The accuracy of the model is at a level of 1 mm . Using this simulation model, the study carried out analyses of different factors, such as tissue electrical parameters and electrode configurations. The results show that factors influncing the distribution of the internal electric field of the tumor include changes in scalp and skull conductivity (with a maximum variation of 21.0% in the treatment field of the tumor), changes in tumor conductivity (with a maximum variation of 157.8% in the treatment field of the tumor), and different electrode positions and combinations (with a maximum variation of 74.2% in the treatment field of the tumor). In summary, the results of this study validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed modeling method, which can provide an important reference for future simulation analyses of TTFields and clinical applications.

[Simulation model of tumor-treating fields].

Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique with great potential. Electrode optimization methods based on simulation models of individual TES field could provide personalized stimulation parameters according to individual variations in head tissue structure, significantly enhancing the stimulation accuracy of TES. However, the existing electrode optimization methods suffer from prolonged computation times (typically exceeding 1 d) and limitations such as disregarding the restricted number of output channels from the stimulator, further impeding their clinical applicability. Hence, this paper proposes an efficient and practical electrode optimization method. The proposed method simultaneously optimizes both the intensity and focality of TES within the target brain area while constraining the number of electrodes used, and it achieves faster computational speed. Compared to commonly used electrode optimization methods, the proposed method significantly reduces computation time by 85.9% while maintaining optimization effectiveness. Moreover, our method considered the number of available channels for the stimulator to distribute the current across multiple electrodes, further improving the tolerability of TES. The electrode optimization method proposed in this paper has the characteristics of high efficiency and easy operation, potentially providing valuable supporting data and references for the implementation of individualized TES.
