The objective of this study was to determine the severity of attention deficit, hyperactivity, and impulsivity symptoms in patients with obstructive airway problems scheduled to undergo adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy operation. The effects of the surgical treatment on these symptoms will also be investigated in a case-control design.

Evaluation of hyperactivity, attention deficit, and impulsivity before and after adenoidectomy/adenotonsillectomy surgery.

Cisplatin (CDDP) is a widely used antineoplastic drug. However, its use is limited due to the ototoxic side effects. In this study, the effects of ethyl pyruvate (EP), known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, against CDDP ototoxicity were investigated.

The effects of ethyl pyruvate against experimentally induced cisplatin ototoxicity in rats.

The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy rates of the patients who underwent an operation for parotid mass, by comparing their fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) cytology results with the final pathology. A total of 136 patient files of those who applied to Otorhinolaryngology clinic due to parotid mass and underwent parotidectomy procedure between 2010 and 2020 at a tertiary center were scanned retrospectively. Database on patient age, gender, preoperative FNAB results, and final surgical histopathology results was created. The mean age of the patients was 48.26 ± 17.37 Superficial parotidectomy was performed to 108 (79.4%) and total parotidectomy to 28 (20.6%) of the patients. The sensitivity of FNAB was found as 85.2%, specificity as 96.2%, positive predictive value as 85.2%, negative predictive value as 96.2% and accuracy as 94.0%. It is found that FNAB has the high specificity and high negative predictive value with high diagnostic accuracy on detecting preoperative malignancy in parotid gland. We think that FNAB is a significant, necessary and safe method in the diagnosis of parotid lesions in preoperative sense.

The Diagnostic Value of Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy in Parotid Tumors.

Can deep learning replace histopathological examinations in the differential diagnosis of cervical lymphadenopathy?

Mucormycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection, where rapid diagnosis is critical. We developed a deep learning approach using paranasal computed tomography (CT) images to test whether mucormycosis can be detected automatically, potentially aiding or expediting the diagnostic process that traditionally relies on biopsy.

Automated Mucormycosis Diagnosis from Paranasal CT Using ResNet50 and ConvNeXt Small.

: We aimed to apply the ensemble machine learning model to diagnose thyroid cartilage invasion detected in computer tomography (CT) images in laryngeal cancers and evaluate the diagnostic performance of the model. : A total of 313 patients were divided into two groups: the cartilage invasion group and the no cartilage invasion group. At least four CT slices were randomly selected for each patient, resulting in a total of 1251 images used in the study. A total of 619 axial CT images from the no cartilage invasion group and 632 axial CT images from the cartilage invasion group were used in the study. We reviewed the CT images and histopathological diagnoses in all cases to determine the invasion positive- or negative-status as a ground truth. The ensemble model, comprising ResNet50 and MobileNet deep learning architectures, was applied to CT images. : The following were obtained by the ensemble model with the test dataset: area under the curve (AUC) 0.99, and accuracy 96.54%. This model demonstrates a very high level of performance in detecting thyroid cartilage invasion. : The ensemble machine learning model is an effective method for detecting neoplastic infiltration of the thyroid cartilage. Moreover, it may be a valuable diagnostic tool for clinicians in assessing disease prognosis and determining appropriate treatment strategies in laryngeal cancers. In conclusion, this model could be integrated into future clinical practice in laryngology and head and neck surgery for the detection of cartilage neoplastic infiltration.

Is the Ensemble Machine Learning Model a Reliable Method for Detecting Neoplastic Infiltration of Thyroid Cartilage in Laryngeal Cancers?

 Lateral osteotomies in rhinoplasty run adjacent to the lacrimal drainage system (LDS), risking postoperative tearing. Piezoelectric (piezo) devices enable precise bone cuts that may reduce LDS trauma. We compared the 1-month incidence of objective lacrimal dysfunction after piezo versus classic osteotomy.  Retrospective, single-center controlled cohort (1 January 2024-1 January 2025) at a tertiary ENT clinic. Consecutive patients aged 19-45 with pre-operative paranasal sinus CT and no prior lacrimal disorder were grouped by osteotomy technique (piezo vs. classic;  = 65 per arm). Assessments were performed at postoperative day 7-10 and at 1, 3, and 6-12 months. The primary endpoint was 1-month objective lacrimal dysfunction, defined as fluorescein dye disappearance test (FDDT) grade ≥1 or reflux/resistance on irrigation plus symptoms (Munk ≥2). Pre-specified statistical tests were used.  Early tearing favored piezo. At week 1, epiphora occurred in 32.3% with piezo versus 46.1% with classic ( = 0.041); by month 6, rates were 4.6% versus 15.1% ( = 0.031). Differences at months 1 and 3 also favored piezo but were not statistically significant ( = 0.062 and  = 0.088). FDDT positivity was lower with piezo at week 1 (23.0% vs. 38.4%,  = 0.045) and month 6 (3.0% vs. 10.7%,  = 0.048). Irrigation obstruction was less frequent with piezo at week 1 (7.6% vs. 21.5%,  = 0.026), but groups converged by months 1 (15.4% vs. 12.3%,  = 0.80) and 3 (6.2% vs. 4.6%,  > 0.99). Punctum stenosis/occlusion remained uncommon in both groups without significant differences.  Piezo-assisted lateral osteotomy is associated with less early lacrimal dysfunction and lower 6-month epiphora compared with the classic technique. Convergence of irrigation findings by 1-3 months suggests postoperative edema as the dominant transient mechanism. Given the retrospective, single-center design and low event rates, multicenter prospective studies powered for early LDS outcomes are warranted.
