The honeybee brain is a central organ in regulating wide ranges of honeybee biology, including life transition from nurse to forager bees. Knowledge is still lacking on how protein phosphorylation governs the neural activity to drive the age-specific labor division. The cerebral phosphoproteome of nurse and forager honeybees was characterized using Ti-IMAC phosphopeptide enrichment mass-spectrometry-based proteomics and protein kinases (PKs) were predicted. There were 3,077 phosphosites residing on 3,234 phosphopeptides from 1004 phosphoproteins in the nurse bees. For foragers the numbers were 3,056, 3,110, and 958, respectively. Notably, among the total 231 PKs in honeybee proteome, 179 novel PKs were predicted in the honeybee brain, of which 88 were experimentally identified. Proteins involved in wide scenarios of pathways were phosphorylated depending on age: glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, AGE/RAGE and phosphorylation in nurse bees and metal ion transport, ATP metabolic process and phototransduction in forager bees. These observations suggest that phosphorylation is vital to the tuning of protein activity to regulate cerebral function according to the biological duties as nursing and foraging bees. The data provides valuable information on phosphorylation signaling in the honeybee brain and potentially useful resource to understand the signaling mechanism in honeybee neurobiology and in other social insects as well.

Phosphoproteome Analysis Reveals Phosphorylation Underpinnings in the Brains of Nurse and Forager Honeybees (Apis mellifera).

 The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of brachytherapy combined with or without hormone therapy in patients with localized prostate cancer.  We systemically searched the Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Embase databases for studies published between the databases' dates of inception and February 2019. The primary endpoints were the 5-year overall survival (OS) rates, 5-year biochemical progression-free survival (bPFS) rates and 10-year bPFS rates. The results were expressed as the relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Based on the heterogeneity evaluated with the   statistic, a meta-analysis was performed using either a random- or fixed-effects model.  A total of 16 cohort studies including 9,359 patients met all the criteria for inclusion in the analysis. Our data showed that brachytherapy (BT) combined with hormone therapy (HT) increased the patients' 5-year bPFS rates (RR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.08,  = 0.005) and 10-year bPFS rates (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02-1.23,  = 0.001) compared with BT monotherapy. However, BT combined with HT did not increase the patients' 5-year OS rates (RR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.99-1.095,  = 0.1) compared with BT monotherapy.  BT combined with HT can increase the bPFS rates of patients with localized prostate cancer, but it does not improve patients' OS rates.

Brachytherapy Combined With or Without Hormone Therapy for Localized Prostate Cancer: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review.

In spite of the great potential in leading next-generation energy storage technology, Li-S batteries suffer rapid capacity decay arising from the shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), a major concern that must be addressed before commercialization can be realized. To tackle this challenge, we demonstrate a facile approach to fabricate a hierarchically structured composite of FeP@nitrogen, phosphorus codoped carbon (FeP@NPC) by direct biological recycling of iron metal from electroplating sludge using bacteria. This material, featuring uniform dispersion of FeP nanoparticles (NPs) in porous NPC matrix, effectively adapts volume variation of sulfur upon cycling and simultaneously provides multiple channels for efficient lithium ion transport. In addition, FeP NPs with strong adhesion properties of tightly anchored soluble LiPSs formed during discharge can significantly facilitate the decomposition of LiS during the subsequent charging process. The Li-S cell built on this cathode architecture delivers high specific capacity (1555.7 mAh g at 0.1 C), appreciable rate capability (679.7 mAh g at 10 C), and greatly enhanced cycling performance (761.9 mAh g at 1.0 C after 500 cycles).

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is an effective method for the treatment of refractory and relapsed acute leukemia, and the preconditioning methods before transplantationis one of the important factors affecting the survival of patients. Radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy is the most commonly used preconditioning method before transplantation. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of total bone marrow combined with total lymphatic irradiation as a preconditioning method before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

One-step fabrication of lidocaine/CalliSpheres composites for painless transcatheter arterial embolization.

 Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant cancer. Metastasis plays a critical role in tumor progression, and vascular invasion is considered one of the most crucial factors for HCC metastasis. However, comprehensive analysis focusing on competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) and immune infiltration in the vascular invasion of HCC is lacking.  The gene expression profiles of 321 samples, including 210 primary HCC cases and 111 HCC cases with vascular invasion, were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Liver Hepatocellular Carcinoma project, and used in identifying significant differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), miRNAs (DEmiRNAs), and mRNAs (DEmRNAs). The RNAs associated with vascular invasion were used in constructing a ceRNA network. A multigene-based risk signature was constructed using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm. We detected the fractions of 28 immune cell types in HCC through single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA). Finally, the relationship between the ceRNA network and immune cells was determined through correlation analysis and used in clarifying the potential mechanism involved in vascular invasion.  Overall, 413 DElncRNAs, 27 DEmiRNAs, and 397 DEmRNAs were recognized in HCC. A specific ceRNA network based on the interaction among 3 lncRNA-miRNA pairs and 24 miRNA-mRNA pairs were established. A ceRNA-based prognostic signature was constructed and used in dividing samples into high- and low-risk subgroups. The signature showed significant efficacy; its 3- and 5-year areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 0.712 and 0.653, respectively. ceRNA and ssGSEA integration analysis demonstrated that PART1 ( = 0, R = -0.33) and CDK5R2 ( = 0.01, R = -0.15) were negatively correlated to natural killer cells.  This study demonstrated that vascular invasion in HCC might be related to PART1, and its role in regulating CDK5R2 and NK cells. A nomogram was developed to predict the prognosis of patients with HCC and demonstrated the value of the ceRNA network and tumor-infiltrating immune cells value in improving personalized management.

Construction and Comprehensive Analysis of ceRNA Networks and Tumor-Infiltrating Immune Cells in Hepatocellular Carcinoma With Vascular Invasion.

Endobronchial stent exacerbates the formation of granulation tissue. Radiotherapy maybe a durable treatment option for granulation hyperplasia. In this study, we explore the results of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for granulation hyperplasia after airway stent placement. A total of 30 New Zealand rabbits were assigned in three groups, Control group (n = 12), low dosage (LD, 12 Gy in 4 fractions and twice a week) group (n = 9) and high dosage (HD, 20 Gy in 4 fractions and twice a week) group (n = 9). Post-stenting 1 week, LD and HD group started to receive EBRT. Bronchoscopy, Haematoxylin-eosin (HE), Masson's trichrome (MTS), Safranin O (SO) and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining protocols were performed to evaluate the histopathological changes of trachea. A total of 30 stents were successfully implanted in 30 rabbits. No procedure-related death and complications happened. Post-stenting 4 w, 8 w and 12 w, the ventilate area ratio (VAR) and qualitative histological scoring (QHS) in the LD group and HD group lower than the Control group. Post-stenting 12w, the immunohistochemical results revealed that the positive percentage of TGF-β and VEGF in the LD group and HD group were lower than the Control group. In conclusion, the present study investigated the efficacy of EBRT in reducing stent related granulation tissue formation in the rabbit trachea. Higher dosage EBRT with a better result in inhibiting granulation hyperplasia.

External beam radiotherapy inhibits stent related granulation hyperplasia in rabbit trachea.

Polymyxins were applied via different administration routes to treat ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB). The potential benefits of aerosolised polymyxins as adjunctive treatment for patients are contradictory. This review assessed the safety and efficacy of intravenous (IV) combined with aerosolised polymyxins vs IV polymyxins monotherapy in patients with VAP caused by CR-GNB. Two reviewers independently evaluated and extracted data from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and Web of Science. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality and secondary outcomes included clinical cure rate, clinical improvement rate, microbiological eradication rate and nephrotoxicity. Differences for dichotomous outcomes were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Eleven eligible studies were included. The results showed that compared with IV polymyxins monotherapy, IV plus aerosolised polymyxins therapy significantly reduced all-cause mortality rate (OR = 0.75, 95% CI 0.57-0.99, P = 0.045) and improved clinical improvement rate (OR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.02-2.60, P = 0.043) and microbial eradication rate (OR = 2.07, 95% CI 1.40-3.05, P = 0.000). However, there were no significant differences in terms of clinical cure rate (OR = 1.59, 95% CI 0.96-2.63, P = 0.072) and nephrotoxicity (OR = 1.14, 95% CI 0.80-1.63, P = 0.467) for IV plus aerosolised polymyxins therapy. Subgroup analysis revealed that the clinical improvement rate was significantly improved in case-control studies. Aerosolised polymyxins may be a useful adjunct to IV polymyxins for patients with CR-GNB VAP.

Intravenous combined with aerosolised polymyxins vs intravenous polymyxins monotherapy for ventilator-associated pneumonia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study aims to compare the technical characteristics of TomoDirect (TD) radiotherapy and TomoHelical (HT) radiotherapy in total skin irradiation (TSI) applications. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of dosimetric parameters and delivery efficiency in TD-based treatment planning to establish clinical guidelines for modality selection in mycosis fungoides.

Photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction offers a sustainable approach for hydrogen peroxide (HO) synthesis, while the efficiency is limited by the challenge of synergistically optimizing the supply of oxygen, protons, and electrons. Here, by elaborately developing squaric acid-based zwitterionic covalent organic framework (STT COF), we propose a triple synergy strategy for boosting HO photosynthesis. The as-prepared STT COF delivers a high HO yield of 14356.5 μmol g h in pure water, with a notable apparent quantum yield of 40.0% at 420 nm, roughly 7.9 times that of its charge-neutral counterpart and outperforming other documented systems. Under natural sunlight irradiation, a 5 L HO solution (~400 μM) is produced in a continuous flow membrane reactor equipped with STT COF and gas diffusion layers. Mechanism studies demonstrate that STT COF induces a strong donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction to promote electron transfer, undergoes spontaneous hydrogenation for continuous protons and facilitating oxygen uptake in a favorable configuration, collectively creating a triple synergy to boost HO photosynthesis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common aggressive malignant tumors worldwide with poor clinical outcomes and high mortality rates, highlighting the pressing need to identify reliable biomarkers. Nucleolar protein 11 (NOL11), as an essential element for ribosomal biosynthesis, has been implicated in the development and progression of various diseases. However, the potential role of NOL11 in HCC remains elusive.
