Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in death of spinal neurons and atrophy of muscles which they govern. Thus, following SCI, reorganizing the lumbar spinal sensorimotor pathways is crucial to alleviate muscle atrophy. Tail nerve electrical stimulation (TANES) has been shown to activate the central pattern generator (CPG) and improve the locomotion recovery of spinal contused rats. Electroacupuncture (EA) is a traditional Chinese medical practice which has been proven to have a neural protective effect. Here, we examined the effects of TANES and EA on lumbar motor neurons and hindlimb muscle in spinal transected rats, respectively. From the third day postsurgery, rats in the TANES group were treated 5 times a week and those in the EA group were treated once every other day. Four weeks later, both TANES and EA showed a significant impact in promoting survival of lumbar motor neurons and expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and ameliorating atrophy of hindlimb muscle after SCI. Meanwhile, the expression of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) in the same spinal cord segment was significantly increased. These findings suggest that TANES and EA can augment the expression of NT-3 in the lumbar spinal cord that appears to protect the motor neurons as well as alleviate muscle atrophy.

Effect of thromboprophylaxis on the incidence of venous thromboembolism in surgical patients with colorectal cancer: a meta-analysis.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of Schizonepetae Herba and Saposhnikoviae Radix(wind medicine) on the expression of AQP4 and AQP8 in colonic mucosa in rats with ulcerative colitis(UC). A total of 35 healthy SD male rats were randomly divided into normal group(gavaged with normal saline), DSS model group, as well as low, middle, and high dose wind medicine groups(Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia 1∶1, gavaged at dosages of 6, 12, and 24 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)), with 7 in each group. UC rat model was established by free drinking of 3% dextran sulphate sodium(DSS) solution for 10 days. At the end of the 10 th day after the treatment, mice were put to death to collect colonic mucosa. The length of colon was measured; the colonic mucosal injury index(CMDI) and pathological changes of colon were observed. ELISA method was used for measuring the content of serum IL-1, IL-8, and immunohistochemical method was used to measure AQP4, AQP8 protein expressions in colon mucosa. The expressions of AQP4, AQP8 mRNA were measured by Real-time PCR. As compared with the normal group, the length of colon tissue was significantly reduced(P&lt;0.01), CMDI scores and pathological scores were significantly increased(P&lt;0.01), the levels of serum IL-1 and IL-8 were significantly increased(P&lt;0.05) in model group; the immunohistochemical results showed that the protein expressions of AQP4, AQP8 were lower; the color was light yellow or brown; AQP4, AQP8 mRNA expressions in colon mucosa were significantly decreased in model group(P&lt;0.01). CMDI scores, pathological scores, and the levels of serum IL-1, IL-8 in high, middle, low dose wind medicine groups were obvious lower than those in the model group(P&lt;0.01 or P&lt;0.05); the protein expressions of AQP4, AQP8 were higher; the color was chocolate brown or dark brown; the length of colon tissue, and the expressions of AQP4, AQP8 mRNA were obvious higher in wind medicine groups(P&lt;0.01 or P&lt;0.05). Schizonepetae Herba and Saposhnikoviae Radix could significantly improve the symptoms and histopathology of UC model rats and accelerate the intestinal mucosal healing. The mechanism may be related with up-regulating the expression level of AQP4 and AQP8 in colonic mucosa.

This study aimed to investigate the possible mechanism of the Zhishi and Baizhu herb pair in the treatment of gastric cancer by means of network pharmacology and molecular docking and to provide a theoretical basis for experiments and clinical application of traditional Chinese medicine for treating gastric cancer.

Network Pharmacology and Molecular Docking Study of Zhishi-Baizhu Herb Pair in the Treatment of Gastric Cancer.

Zinc finger antiviral proteins (ZAP) can significantly inhibit the replication of avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J), but the traditional method of ZAP administration is by injection, which can easily cause stress effects in chickens. In this work, we established a sodium alginate/atractylodis macrocephalae system for the encapsulation of CCCH-type zinc finger antiviral protein (CCCH-ZAP). Because of the high cost of ZAP, we first chose bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein to investigate the encapsulation performance. The SEM images clearly confirmed that BSA and the sodium alginate/atractylodis macrocephalae system can assemble easily to form relatively stable nanostructures, and the encapsulation amount of BSA can reach 68%. Subsequently, the encapsulation of ZAP was studied. The SEM and the encapsulation experiments confirmed that ZAP can also be assembly encapsulated in the sodium alginate/atractylodis macrocephalae system with the encapsulation amount of 80%. Release studies showed that the SA/AM-ZAP nanocomposite was able to achieve a release rate of 32% of ZAP. This work successfully confirms the assembly encapsulation of ZAP, which will be beneficial for the usage of ZAP-based animal drugs.

Jiawei-Huang Lian-Gan Jiang decoction (JWHLGJD) was developed to treat and prevent the patients with colorectal adenomas (CRA) in China. This study is aimed to discover JWHLGJD's active compounds and demonstrate mechanisms of JWHLGJD against CRA through network pharmacology and molecular docking techniques.

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory disease, often cause carcinogenesis, disability, and intestinal perforation. The JingFangFuZiLiZhong formula (JFFZLZ) shows a good effect against UC in the clinic. Hence, we aim to investigate the mechanisms between JFFZLZ and UC  network pharmacology data mining and  experiments.

Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is a malignant tumor type. Fever is the most common postoperative complication of COAD. The present study described the treatment of a patient with early-stage COAD with precancerous colon polyps and the possible cause of postoperative fever. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with intermittent hematochezia, defecation urgency and liquid feces. The patient received surgical treatment, a whole segment from the intestine was removed, which contained a 4-cm-long mass and a 2-cm-long firm mass. Within 3 days after the operation, the patient's incision healed well, but the body temperature increased to a range of 37.8-38.6°C. The suture was removed on the 10th postoperative day. After another three days, it was discovered that the upper end of the patient's surgical incision split to the anterior rectus abdominis sheath. The patient was provided with recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor to promote wound healing. The patient was finally diagnosed with rectosigmoid junction adenocarcinoma and precancerous colon polyps according to pathological examination results. The patient was given intravenous bevacizumab combined with irinotecan hydrochloride and oral capecitabine, and all drugs were repeatedly applied every 3 weeks, and a total of four treatment cycles were used. The cause of this postoperative fever was concluded to be anemia coming from chronic hematochezia and combined with deep wound dehiscence with secondary infection. The present study showcased that low-dose and short-course prophylactic adjuvant therapy is feasible for early-stage COAD with precancerous colon polyps.
