One class of goldfish bipolar cells, the mixed-input bipolar cell, contacts both rods and cones. Although the morphology of the different mixed-input bipolar cell subtypes has been described, insight into the interaction between rods and cones at the bipolar cell level is scarce. The aim of this study was to characterize this interaction in the different physiological types of mixed-input bipolar cells. We found mixed-input bipolar cells that depolarized, hyperpolarized, or showed a combination of the two types of response after center stimulation. The relative contributions of rod and cone inputs varied strongly in these cell populations. Depolarizing mixed-input bipolar cells are rod-dominated, having the highest sensitivity and the smallest dynamic range. Hyperpolarizing mixed-input bipolar cells, on the other hand, have a more balanced rod-cone input ratio. This extends their dynamic range and decreases their sensitivity. Finally, opponent mixed-input bipolar cells seem to be mostly cone-dominated, although some rod input is present. The antagonistic photoreceptor inputs form a push-pull system that makes these mixed-input bipolar cells very sensitive to changes in light intensity. Our finding that spectral tuning changes with light intensity conflicts with the idea that the separate non-opponent and opponent channels are related to coding of brightness and color, respectively. The organization of mixed-input bipolar cells into various classes with different dynamic ranges and absolute sensitivities might be a strategy to transmit information about all visual aspects most efficiently, given the sustained nature of bipolar cell responses and their limited voltage range.

Una clase de c&eacute;lulas bipolares de peces de colores, la c&eacute;lula bipolar de entrada mixta, entra en contacto con los bastones y conos. Aunque se ha descrito la morfolog&iacute;a de los subtipos de diferentes c&eacute;lulas bipolares de la entrada de mezclado, la penetraci&oacute;n en la interacci&oacute;n entre bastones y conos en el nivel de c&eacute;lulas bipolares es escasa. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar esta interacci&oacute;n en los diferentes tipos fisiol&oacute;gicos de entrada mixta de c&eacute;lulas bipolares. Encontramos c&eacute;lulas bipolares de la mezcla de entrada que depolarized, hyperpolarized o demostraron una combinaci&oacute;n de los dos tipos de respuesta despu&eacute;s de la estimulaci&oacute;n del centro. Las contribuciones relativas de los insumos de la varilla y cono variaron fuertemente en estas poblaciones celulares. Despolarizaci&oacute;n entrada mixta de c&eacute;lulas bipolares son dominado por barra, tener la sensibilidad m&aacute;s alta y el m&aacute;s peque&ntilde;o rango din&aacute;mico. Hiperpolarizador entrada mixta de c&eacute;lulas bipolares, por el contrario, tienen una proporci&oacute;n de entrada m&aacute;s equilibrada de conos. Esto ampl&iacute;a su gama din&aacute;mica y disminuye su sensibilidad. Finalmente, oponente entrada mixta de c&eacute;lulas bipolares parecen ser principalmente dominado por cono, aunque algunas entradas de barra est&aacute; presente. Las entradas del fotorreceptor antag&oacute;nicas forman un sistema de vaiv&eacute;n que hace que estas c&eacute;lulas bipolares de la mezcla de entrada muy sensibles a los cambios en la intensidad de la luz. Nuestro hallazgo que espectral adaptaci&oacute;n cambios con conflictos de la intensidad de la luz con la idea de que los canales separados no oponente y el oponente se relacionan con codificaci&oacute;n de brillo y color, respectivamente. We studied the localization of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) in the goldfish outer plexiform layer by light-and electron-microscopical immunohistochemistry. The mGluR1alpha antibody labeled putative ON-type bipolar cell dendrites and horizontal cell processes in both rod spherules and cone triads. Immunolabeling for mGluR2/3 was absent in the rod synaptic complex but was found at horizontal cell dendrites directly opposing the cone synaptic ribbon. The mGluR5 antibody labeled MÃ¼ller cell processes wrapping rod terminals and horizontal cell somata. The mGluR7 antibody labeled mainly horizontal cell dendrites invaginating rods and cones and some putative bipolar cell dendrites in the cone synaptic complex. The finding of abundant expression of various mGluRs in bipolar and horizontal cell dendrites suggests multiple sites of glutamatergic modulation in the outer retina.

Der mGluR7 Antik&ouml;rper beschriftet haupts&auml;chlich horizontale Zelle Dendriten invaginating St&auml;bchen und Zapfen und einige vermeintliche Bipolare Zellen-Dendriten in der Kegel synaptischen Komplex. Die Feststellung der reichlich Ausdruck der verschiedenen mGluRs in bipolar und horizontale Zelle Dendriten schl&auml;gt mehrere Standorte der Glutamat-Modulation in der &auml;u&szlig;eren Netzhaut.

Abbiamo studiato la localizzazione dei recettori di glutammato metabotropico (mGluRs) nello strato plessiforme esterno ciprino dorato di luce- e immunoistochimica elettrone-microscopica. L&#39;anticorpo mGluR1alpha etichettati putativi dendriti delle cellule bipolari di tipo ON e processi di cellule orizzontali in sferule di asta e triadi di cono. Immunomarcatura per mGluR2/3 era assente in asta sinaptica complesso ma &egrave; stato trovato a dendriti delle cellule orizzontali opposte direttamente il nastro sinaptica cono. L&#39;anticorpo di mGluR5 etichettato processi di cellule di M&uuml;ller avvolgimento terminali asta e somata cellula orizzontale. L&#39;anticorpo mGluR7 contrassegnato principalmente dendriti delle cellule orizzontali invaginating coni retinici e coni e alcuni dendriti delle cellule bipolari putativo nel complesso sinaptico cono. Il ritrovamento di abbondante espressione di vari mGluRs in dendriti delle cellule bipolari e orizzontali suggerisce molteplici siti di modulazione glutamatergico nella retina esterna.

Inmunomarcaci&oacute;n para mGluR2/3 estuvo ausente en la varilla sin&aacute;ptica complejo pero se encontr&oacute; en las dendritas de la c&eacute;lula horizontal oponerse directamente a la cinta sin&aacute;ptica del cono. El anticuerpo de mGluR5 etiquetado como terminales de barra y somata c&eacute;lula horizontal de procesos de la c&eacute;lula de M&uuml;ller. El anticuerpo mGluR7 etiquetado principalmente dendritas de la c&eacute;lula horizontal invaginando varillas y conos y algunas dendritas supuesta c&eacute;lula bipolar en el complejo sin&aacute;ptico de cono. El hallazgo de abundante expresi&oacute;n de mGluRs varios en las dendritas de las c&eacute;lulas bipolares y horizontales sugiere m&uacute;ltiples sitios de modulaci&oacute;n glutamat&eacute;rgica en la retina externa.

The general organization of the vertebrate retina is highly conserved, in spite of structural variations that occur in different animal classes. The retinas of cyprinid fish, for example, differ in many aspects from those of primates. However, these differences are in the same order of magnitude as those found among mammalian species. Therefore, it is important to consider whether these changes are minor variations on the same theme or whether they lead to fundamentally different functions. In this light, we compare the retinal organization of teleost fish and mammals as regards parallel processing and discuss their many similarities.

Die Netzhaut Friedfischrevieren Fische unterscheiden sich beispielsweise in vielerlei Hinsicht von denen der Primaten. Allerdings sind diese Unterschiede in der gleichen Gr&ouml;&szlig;enordnung wie die unter Arten von S&auml;ugetieren gefunden. Daher ist es wichtig zu pr&uuml;fen, ob diese &Auml;nderungen sind geringf&uuml;gige Abweichungen auf das gleiche Thema oder ob sie zu grundlegend unterschiedliche Funktionen f&uuml;hren. La organizaci&oacute;n general de la retina vertebrada es altamente conservada, a pesar de las variaciones estructurales que ocurren en diferentes clases de animales. Las retinas de carpas, por ejemplo, difieren en muchos aspectos de los primates. Sin embargo, estas diferencias son en el mismo orden de magnitud como los que se encuentran entre las especies mam&iacute;feras. Por lo tanto, es importante considerar si estos cambios son peque&ntilde;as variaciones sobre el mismo tema o si conducen a funciones fundamentalmente diferentes. En este sentido, comparamos la organizaci&oacute;n retiniana de peces tele&oacute;steos y mam&iacute;feros en cuanto a procesamiento en paralelo y discutir sus muchas similitudes.
