Secondary reconstruction in trauma surgery is crucial for restoring both functional and esthetic results in patients with complex defects. Established reconstructive techniques in plastic surgery offer a wide range of options for an effective treatment. This applies not only to covering large defects with free flaps but especially also for the functional reconstruction of bony, neural and musculotendinous impairments. Advances in the fields of microsurgery and 3D printing show innovative approaches to further improve the therapeutic options. A multidisciplinary approach, requiring close collaboration between trauma and plastic surgeons, is necessary to optimize treatment plans and outcomes. The effective management of complications and qualified postoperative care are essential for the success of reconstructive measures.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) frequently causes both healthcare-associated infections and nosocomial outbreaks in burn medicine/plastic surgery and beyond. Owing to the high antibiotic resistance, infections are difficult to treat, and patient outcomes are often compromised. The environmental persistence capability of CRAB favors its transmission in hospitals. A comprehensive analysis and understanding of CRAB epidemiology and microbiology are essential for guiding management.

High body mass index (BMI) has been linked to higher risk of complications following implant-based breast reconstruction. However, the impact of increasing BMI within the normal to overweight range (18.5-30 kg/m) remains underexplored. We aimed to examine the association between BMI and complications and evaluate differences in risk of implant loss between patients undergoing immediate- and delayed reconstruction.

The aim of the study was to systematically review the surgical outcomes of robot-assisted pelvic reconstruction using rectus abdominis muscle flaps in patients with any pelvic cancers.

Subpectoral implant placement has traditionally been favored in implant-based breast reconstruction owing to concerns regarding soft tissue coverage. Advances in surgical techniques and use of acellular dermal matrix have increased interest in prepectoral placement, but more evidence on postoperative complications is needed. We compared complication rates between prepectoral and subpectoral implant placement using target trial emulation.
