BMY-28100 is a new orally absorbed cephalosporin whose in vitro activity was compared with that of cefaclor. BMY-28100 was more active against Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophilus influenzae than was cefaclor. In addition, there was only a small rise in MIC50 and MIC90 values for BMY-28100 when the inoculum size was increased 100- or 10,000-fold. In contrast, MIC50 and MIC90 values increased significantly for cefaclor with similar increases in inoculum size. These data suggest that BMY-28100 may be a promising agent to test for oral administration in infections caused by S. aureus and H. influenzae.

Clindamycin was used alone for treatment of experimental osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus in rabbits. Treatment with 30 mg/kg of body weight three times a day for 14 days was ineffective in sterilizing infected rabbit bones. In contrast, when given for 28 days, clindamycin sterilized the infected bones of 16 (84%) of 19 rabbits treated. Only one of 14 isolates of S. aureus from rabbits treated for two weeks developed resistance to clindamycin (minimal inhibitory concentration, greater than 100 micrograms/ml); none of three isolates from rabbits in which treatment failed in the four-week treatment group showed resistance to clindamycin. The results of four weeks of treatment with clindamycin for chronic experimental staphylococcal osteomyelitis were significantly better than those obtained with any other single agent used in prior studies and were generally as good as those with combination therapy that included rifampin.

A novel application of electrowetting devices has been simulated: wavefront correction using an array of electrowetting lenses and prisms. Five waves of distortion can be corrected with Strehl ratios of 0.9 or higher, utilizing piston, tip-tilt, and curvature corrections from arrays of 19 elements and fill factors as low as 40%. Effective control of piston can be achieved by placing the liquid lens array at the focus of two microlens arrays. Seven waves of piston delay can be generated with variation in focal length between 1.5 and 500 mm.

Simulation of electrowetting lens and prism arrays for wavefront compensation.

We demonstrate motion-free beam quality MÂ² measurements of stigmatic, simple astigmatic, and general astigmatic (twisted) beams using only a focus-tunable liquid lens and a CCD camera. We extend the variable-focus technique to the characterization of general astigmatic beams by measuring the 10 second-order moments of the power density distribution for the twisted beam produced by passage through multimode optical fiber. Our method measures the same MÂ² values as the traditional variable-distance method for a wide range of laser beam sources, including nearly TEM(00) (MÂ²â‰ˆ1) and general astigmatic multimode beams (MÂ²â‰ˆ8). The method is simple and compact, with no moving parts or complex apparatus and measurement precision comparable to the standard variable-distance method.

Measurement of the MÂ² beam propagation factor using a focus-tunable liquid lens.

We have demonstrated a one-dimensional array of individually addressable electrowetting tunable liquid lenses that compensate for more than one wave of phase distortion across a wavefront. We report a scheme for piston control using tunable liquid lens arrays in volume-bound cavities that alter the optical path length without affecting the wavefront curvature. Liquid lens arrays with separately tunable focus or phase control hold promise for laser communication systems and adaptive optics.
