We have developed a biomimetic robot based on the American lobster. The robot is designed to achieve the performance advantages of the animal model by adopting biomechanical features and neurobiological control principles. Three types of controllers are described. The first is a state machine based on the connectivity and dynamics of the lobster central pattern generator (CPG). The state machine controls myomorphic actuators based on shape memory alloys (SMAs) and responds to environmental perturbation through sensors that employ a labelled-line code. The controller supports a library of action patterns and exteroceptive reflexes to mediate tactile navigation, obstacle negotiation and adaptation to surge. We are extending this controller to neuronal network-based models. A second type of leg CPG is based on synaptic networks of electronic neurons and has been adapted to control the SMA actuated leg. A brain is being developed using layered reflexes based on discrete time map-based neurons.

Biomimetic approaches to the control of underwater walking machines.

Nous avons mis au point un robot biomim&eacute;tique bas&eacute; sur le homard am&eacute;ricain. Le robot est con&ccedil;u pour r&eacute;aliser les avantages de la performance du mod&egrave;le animal en adoptant caract&eacute;ristiques biom&eacute;caniques et les principes de contr&ocirc;le neurobiologique. Trois types de contr&ocirc;leurs sont d&eacute;crits. La premi&egrave;re est une machine d&#39;&Eacute;tat bas&eacute;e sur la connectivit&eacute; et la dynamique du g&eacute;n&eacute;rateur central de homard (CPG). La machine d&#39;&Eacute;tat contr&ocirc;le actionneurs myomorphic issus des alliages &agrave; m&eacute;moire de forme (AMF) et r&eacute;pond aux perturbations environnementales par le biais de capteurs qui utilisent un code de ligne &eacute;tiquet&eacute;. Le contr&ocirc;leur prend en charge une biblioth&egrave;que de mod&egrave;les d&#39;action et de r&eacute;flexes ext&eacute;roceptifs d&#39;arbitrer la navigation tactile, la n&eacute;gociation de l&#39;obstacle et adaptation de pouss&eacute;e. Nous &eacute;tendons ce contr&ocirc;leur aux mod&egrave;les de r&eacute;seau neuronales. Un second type de jambe CPG est bas&eacute;e sur des r&eacute;seaux synaptiques des neurones &eacute;lectroniques et a &eacute;t&eacute; adapt&eacute; pour contr&ocirc;ler la SMA actionn&eacute;s par jambe. Un cerveau se d&eacute;veloppe &agrave; l&#39;aide de couches r&eacute;flexes issus des neurones de temps discret sur la carte.

Abbiamo sviluppato un robot biomimetico basato sull&#39;aragosta americana. Il robot &egrave; stato progettato per ottenere i vantaggi delle prestazioni del modello animale da adottando caratteristiche biomeccaniche e principi di controllo neurobiologico. Sono descritti tre tipi di controller. La prima &egrave; una macchina di stata basata sulla connettivit&agrave; e dinamiche dell&#39;aragosta central pattern generator (CPG). La macchina dello stato controlla gli attuatori myomorphic basati su shape memory alloys (SMAs) e risponde alle perturbazioni ambientali attraverso sensori che utilizzano un codice riga etichettata. Il controller supporta una libreria di modelli di azione e riflessi estero per mediare navigazione tattile, ostacolo negoziazione e adattamento a surge. Stiamo estendendo questo controller per modelli basati su rete neuronali. Un secondo tipo di gamba CPG &egrave; basato su reti sinaptiche dei neuroni elettronici ed &egrave; stato adattato per il controllo della SMA azionati in gamba. In order to determine the dynamical properties of central pattern generators (CPGs), we have examined the lobster stomatogastric ganglion using the tools of nonlinear dynamics. The lobster pyloric and gastric mill central pattern generators can be analyzed at both the cellular and network levels because they are small, i.e., contain only 25 neurons between them and each neuron and synapse are repeatedly identifiable from animal to animal. We discuss how the biophysical properties of each neuron and synapse in the two circuits act cooperatively to generate two different patterns of sequential activity, how these patterns are altered by neuromodulators and perturbed by noise and sensory inputs. Finally, we show how simplified Hindmarsh-Rose models can be made into analog electronic neurons that mimic the lobster neurons and in addition be incorporated into artificial CPGs with robotic applications.

Oscillations and oscillatory behavior in small neural circuits.

Afin de d&eacute;terminer les propri&eacute;t&eacute;s dynamiques des g&eacute;n&eacute;rateurs de patron central (GPC), nous avons examin&eacute; le ganglion stomagastrique de homard gr&acirc;ce aux outils de dynamique non lin&eacute;aire. Le motif central de homard moulin gastrique et pylorique g&eacute;n&eacute;rateurs peuvent &ecirc;tre analys&eacute;es au niveau cellulaire tant le r&eacute;seau parce qu&#39;ils sont petits, c&#39;est-&agrave;-dire, contiennent seulement 25 neurones entre eux et chaque neurone et synapse sont identifiables &agrave; plusieurs reprises de l&#39;animal &agrave; l&#39;autre. Nous discutons comment les propri&eacute;t&eacute;s biophysiques de chaque neurone et la synapse dans les deux circuits agissent en collaboration pour g&eacute;n&eacute;rer deux mod&egrave;les diff&eacute;rents d&#39;activit&eacute; s&eacute;quentielle, comment ces patrons sont perturb&eacute;es par le bruit et les inputs sensoriels et modifi&eacute;s les neuromodulateurs. Enfin, nous montrons comment simplifi&eacute;e Hindmarsh-Rose mod&egrave;les peuvent &ecirc;tre transform&eacute;s en des neurones &eacute;lectroniques analogiques qui imitent les neurones de homard et de plus &ecirc;tre int&eacute;gr&eacute;es &agrave; la GPC artificiel avec applications robotiques.

Lobsters are generalist decapods that evolved in a broad variety of niches in the Northwestern Atlantic. Due to their inherent buoyancy they have acquired adaptations to reduced traction and surge. We have developed a biomimetic robot based on the lobster that features artificial muscle actuators and sensors employing labeled-line codes. The central controller for this robot is based on the command neuron, coordinating neuron central pattern generator model. A library of commands is released by sensor feedback to mediate adaptive sequences and goal achieving behavior. Rheotaxic behaviors can mediate adaptations to achieve some of the advantages of the biological models.

Underwater walking.

Homards sont les d&eacute;capodes g&eacute;n&eacute;raliste qui a &eacute;volu&eacute; dans une large vari&eacute;t&eacute; de niches dans le nord-ouest de l&#39;Atlantique. En raison de leur flottabilit&eacute; inh&eacute;rente qu&#39;ils ont acquis des adaptations de traction r&eacute;duite et surtension. Nous avons d&eacute;velopp&eacute; un robot biomim&eacute;tique bas&eacute; sur le homard qui dispose d&#39;actionneurs de muscles artificiels et capteurs utilisant des codes de ligne &eacute;tiquet&eacute;. Une biblioth&egrave;que de commandes est distribu&eacute;e par retour du capteur &agrave; la m&eacute;diation des s&eacute;quences adaptatives et objectif atteindre comportement. Programme comportements peuvent m&eacute;dier adaptations pour atteindre certains des avantages des mod&egrave;les biologiques.

Despite several reports of proximal arm ischemia due to radiation therapy, there are no reports of hand ischemia, presumably due to the rarity of radiation treatment of the distal upper extremity. We present a case of a 42-year-old male presenting with acute hand ischemia 36 years after being treated with forearm radiation for Ewing's sarcoma. Angiography demonstrated a patent brachial artery, occluded radial and ulnar arteries in the forearm, and a normal-caliber reconstituted radial artery at the anatomical snuffbox feeding a patent palmar arch. Transluminal balloon angioplasty was attempted initially without improvement. The patient was successfully revascularized with a reversed saphenous vein graft bypass from the distal brachial artery to the distal radial artery. At 22 months of follow-up, the graft remains patent with a palpable distal pulse. The patient continues to report acceptable function and range of motion.

Successful revascularization for delayed presentation of radiation-induced distal upper extremity ischemia.

Malgr&eacute; plusieurs rapports d&#39;isch&eacute;mie bras proximal &agrave; cause de la radioth&eacute;rapie, il n&#39;y a aucun rapport d&#39;isch&eacute;mie main, probablement en raison de la raret&eacute; de la radioth&eacute;rapie de l&#39;extr&eacute;mit&eacute; distale sup&eacute;rieure. L&#39;angiographie a d&eacute;montr&eacute; une art&egrave;re brachiale brevet, occlus des art&egrave;res radiales et ulnaire dans l&#39;avant-bras et une art&egrave;re radiale reconstitu&eacute;e de calibre normal &agrave; la Tabati&egrave;re anatomique alimentant un brevet arc palmaire. Angioplastie transluminale a &eacute;t&eacute; tent&eacute;e au d&eacute;part sans am&eacute;lioration. Le patient a &eacute;t&eacute; revascularis&eacute;e avec succ&egrave;s avec une d&eacute;rivation de greffe veine saph&egrave;ne invers&eacute;e de l&#39;art&egrave;re hum&eacute;rale distale de l&#39;art&egrave;re radiale distale. &Agrave; 22 mois de suivi, la greffe reste brevet avec un pouls distal palpable. Le patient continue de d&eacute;clarer une fonction acceptable et l&#39;amplitude des mouvements.

Revascularisation r&eacute;ussie pour pr&eacute;sentation tardive de l&#39;isch&eacute;mie du membre sup&eacute;rieur distal radio-induits.

Nonostante diverse segnalazioni di ischemia braccio prossimale a causa della radioterapia, ci sono segnalazioni di ischemia mano, presumibilmente a causa della rarit&agrave; del trattamento con radiazioni dell&#39;arto superiore distale. Presentiamo un caso di un 42-anno-vecchio maschio presentando con ischemia acuta mano 36 anni dopo essere stato trattato con radiazioni avambraccio per sarcoma di Ewing. L&#39;angiografia ha dimostrato una brevetto dell&#39;arteria brachiale, occluse le arterie radiale e ulnare nell&#39;avambraccio e una normale calibro ricostituita arteria radiale presso la tabacchiera anatomica alimentazione un brevetto arco palmar. Angioplastica transluminale percutanea &egrave; stato tentato inizialmente senza miglioramento. Il paziente &egrave; stato correttamente revascularized con un bypass di innesto di vena safena invertita dall&#39;arteria brachiale distale all&#39;arteria radiale distale. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (Salmonella Typhi) causes an estimated 22 million typhoid fever cases and 216 000 deaths annually worldwide. In Africa, the lack of laboratory diagnostic capacity limits the ability to recognize endemic typhoid fever and to detect outbreaks. We report a large laboratory-confirmed outbreak of typhoid fever in Uganda with a high proportion of intestinal perforations (IPs).
