Consumer surplus is the difference between what a buyer is willing to pay for a product and the actual market price paid. The triangular area on a demand curve graph represents total consumer surplus in the market. The base of the triangle is the quantity sold at the market price, while the height is the difference between the demand choke price and the actual market price. This visual representation shows the aggregate benefit all consumers receive from purchasing below their maximum willingness to pay.

The demand choke price is the price at which quantity demanded falls to zero—the highest price point on the demand curve where no consumer is willing to buy.
