Weighted average costing divides the total cost of all goods available for sale by the total number of units available. For example, if a company purchases 400 units across three batches totaling $4,800, the weighted average cost per unit is $12. This single average cost is then applied uniformly to all units, regardless of which batch they came from.

Weighted average costing pools all inventory costs together and assigns a single per-unit cost to every unit sold. By averaging costs across all batches, it avoids the timing sensitivities of methods like FIFO or LIFO.
