Overview

The central bank is responsible for conducting monetary policy in a country. Although central banks share similar responsibilities across countries, their organizational structures can vary.

In the United States, the Federal Reserve System, known as the Federal Reserve or simply the Fed, is the central bank. The Federal Reserve is composed of three core components.

The first component is the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, a government body located in Washington, D.C. It consists of seven appointed members, referred to as governors, one of whom serves as Chairman. The Federal Reserve Board provides the leadership of the Federal Reserve System.

The second component includes twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks, also called Reserve Banks, which are situated across various locations in the country. Each of these banks is headed by a President who functions as the Chief Executive Officer of that specific Reserve Bank. These regional banks perform many activities, including supervising and examining member banks, helping to enforce compliance with federal consumer protection and fair lending laws, and providing relevant information.

The third component is the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), a group of twelve members. It includes the seven Governors from the Board and the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as permanent members. The remaining four positions are filled by presidents from the other eleven Reserve Banks on a rotating basis. The FOMC is responsible for making decisions about monetary policy.

Together, these three components form the Federal Reserve System, which functions as the central bank of the United States.

In certain regions, one central bank oversees monetary policy for multiple countries. For instance, the European Central Bank is responsible for managing monetary policy in the Eurozone nations that share the euro as their common currency.

Transcript

The Central Bank is an institution responsible for managing monetary policy.

While the primary responsibilities of central banks are similar across countries, their organizational structures may differ.

For instance, in the United States, the central bank is the Federal Reserve System, commonly known as the Federal Reserve or the Fed.

The Fed has three parts.

First, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors is a government body based in Washington, D.C. It has seven members, called governors.

Next, the system includes twelve Federal Reserve Banks, also called the Reserve Banks, located across the country.

Finally, the Federal Open Market Committee, or the FOMC, includes twelve Federal Reserve officials. The FOMC is the main body responsible for monetary policy. It sets the target federal funds rate, which affects borrowing costs throughout the economy.

In some regions, a single central bank manages monetary policy for several countries. For example, the European Central Bank manages monetary policy for the Eurozone countries that use the euro as their common currency.
