ABO血型系统根据红细胞表面是否存在两种特定抗原（A抗原和B抗原）将人类血液分为四种类型。这些抗原由三个等位基因编码。

等位基因免疫球蛋白A，或简称为等位基因A，在红细胞表面编码抗原A。类似地，等位基因B编码抗原B。

第三种等位基因——记录为小写 i，称为等位基因 O——不编码抗原，意味着红细胞既不表达抗原 A 也不表达抗原 B。

由于抗原的存在决定了血型，等位基因A和B对等位基因O为显性，而等位基因O不产生任何抗原。
