Cells use different signaling mechanisms to communicate with nearby and distant cells. These signaling pathways help coordinate growth, metabolism, and cellular responses to environmental changes.Many forms of cell signaling use chemical messengers called ligands, which bind to specific receptor proteins on target cells. This communication between cells is called intercellular signaling.After a ligand binds to its receptor, the target cell starts intracellular signaling. The cell relays the message through a signaling cascade, where signaling proteins and second messengers often amplify the signal inside the cell.Depending on the distance between cells, signaling can occur through different mechanisms. In autocrine signaling, the ligand acts on the same cell that released it, while paracrine signaling affects nearby cells within the same tissue.Another form of cell communication is contact-dependent, or juxtacrine, signaling, where a ligand attached to one cell binds directly to a receptor on a neighboring cell.In some cases, cells communicate directly through gap junctions in animal cells or through plasmodesmata in plant cells, allowing small molecules and ions to pass between neighboring cells.Some cells communicate across long distances through endocrine signaling. In this process, endocrine glands release hormones into the bloodstream, which carries the signals to distant target tissues or organs.Neurons use synaptic signaling to rapidly communicate with other neurons, muscle cells, or gland cells. In this process, neurons release neurotransmitters that bind to receptors on target cells and help transmit signals.Even bacteria communicate through cell signaling. During quorum sensing, bacterial cells release signaling molecules and respond together once the signaling molecule concentration reaches a certain level.In all forms of cell signaling, the receiving cell ultimately produces a specific response. As a result, cells can activate enzymes, change gene expression, migrate, divide, or release specific molecules.

Despite the protective membrane that separates a cell from the environment, cells need the ability to detect and respond to environmental changes. Additionally, cells often need to communicate with one another. Unicellular and multicellular organisms use a variety of cell signaling mechanisms to communicate and respond to the environment.Cells respond to many types of information, often through receptor proteins positioned on the membrane. For example, skin cells respond to and transmit touch information, while photoreceptors in the retina can detect light. Most cells, however, have evolved to respond to chemical signals, including hormones, neurotransmitters, and many other types of signaling molecules. Cells can even coordinate different responses elicited by the same signaling molecule.Typically, cell signaling involves three steps: (1) reception of the signal, (2) signal transduction, and (3) a response. In most signal reception, a membrane-impermeable molecule, or ligand, causes a change in a membrane receptor; however, some signaling molecules, such as hormones, can traverse the membrane to reach their internal receptors. The membrane receptor can then send this signal to intracellular messengers, which transduce the message into a cellular response. This intracellular response may include a change in transcription, translation, protein activation, or many others.Unicellular organisms such as bacteria can use a type of cell signaling called quorum sensing to detect their concentration in a colony and generate coordinated responses. Eukaryotic cells can release ligands that target the same cell that produced the signal (autocrine signaling) or neighboring cells (paracrine signaling). Signals can even be sent over long distances, as in the case of some hormones, and produce responses in distant cells, called endocrine signaling. Contact-dependent signaling requires direct physical contact between neighboring cells, often through interactions between membrane-bound signaling molecules and receptors. Nervous system cells can generate rapid responses through a specialization of cell signaling called synaptic signaling.
