丙酮酸是糖酵解的终产物,其代谢去向取决于生物体内的生理条件。
在有氧条件下,丙酮酸被转化为乙酰辅酶A,随后通过三羧酸循环和电子传递链产生ATP形式的能量。
但在无氧条件下,电子传递链无法发挥作用,如在酵母和厌氧细菌中所见。因此,丙酮酸被发酵为乙醇,同时将 NADH 氧化为 NAD⁺。NAD⁺ 随后被循环用于糖酵解。
在大多数脊椎动物中,短暂的低氧条件会触发另一种丙酮酸发酵形式,即丙酮酸被发酵为乳酸,从而生成 NAD+。
