当两个波物理上存在于同一位置时,产生的干扰是第三个波。这种效应称为干扰。

在数学上,干涉可以用叠加原理来描述。它指出,如果两个或多个波在同一点重叠,则合成波是各个波的代数和。

在取代数和时,需要考虑振幅和相位。

当两个波在具有相同相位的点上叠加时,合成波的振幅等于单个波的振幅之和。这种现象称为相长干涉。

另一方面,当两个波叠加在相位相反的点上时,合成波的振幅等于两个单独波的振幅之差。这种现象称为相消干涉。
