Velocity and Acceleration of a Wave

The motion of a wave can be studied using wavefunction and can be used to find out various wave parameters.
Consider the wave function for a sinusoidal wave traveling in the positive x-direction.
Taking the partial derivative of the function with time gives the particle&#39;s velocity at a particular position.
Further, taking the partial derivative of the velocity equation with time gives the acceleration of the particle.
The first partial derivative of the wave function with position keeping time constant gives the slope, and the second partial derivative gives the curvature of the wave.
Dividing the particle acceleration by the wave curvature and using the relation, angular frequency divided by the wavenumber equals wave velocity, we obtain the linear wave equation in physics.

A wave propagates through a medium with a constant speed, known as a wave velocity. It is different from the speed of the particles of the medium, which is not constant. In addition, the velocity of the medium is perpendicular to the velocity of the wave. The variable speed of the particles of the medium implies that there must be acceleration associated with it.&#160;
The velocity of the particles can be obtained by taking the partial derivative of the position equation with respect to time. We can then take the partial derivative of the velocity equation with respect to time, to obtain the acceleration of the medium. We can also calculate the slope and curvature of the wave by taking the first and second partial derivative of the position equation with respect to the position, respectively.
These wave parameters can be used to obtain the linear wave equation, which is the ratio of acceleration to the curvature of a wave. The linear wave equation can describe both transverse and longitudinal waves. Interestingly, if two wave functions are individual solutions to the linear wave equation, then the sum of the two linear wave functions is also a solution to it.

Wave motion in a medium has a constant wave velocity. The particles in the medium do not move at that same constant speed. Their motion is perpendicular to the direction of the wave, which helps separate wave speed from particle speed.

Because particle speed changes, the particles must also have acceleration. The particle velocity can be found by taking the partial derivative of the position equation with respect to time. Then the acceleration comes from taking the partial derivative of the velocity equation with respect to time.

The shape of the wave can also be described mathematically. The slope of the wave comes from the first partial derivative of the position equation with respect to position. The curvature comes from the second partial derivative with respect to position. These quantities are used in the linear wave equation, which is the ratio of a wave’s acceleration to its curvature.

The linear wave equation can describe both transverse waves and longitudinal waves. It also shows a useful math property. If two wave functions each solve the equation on their own, their sum is also a solution.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Reading Wave Motion by Its Features

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions. A simplified surface water wave is a good example. The water moves up and down, while the wave disturbance travels horizontally through the medium. A wave on a string can be modeled with a wavefunction. The string moves up and down in simple harmonic motion and has a period T.
