工程力学的基本概念包括长度、时间、质量与力。

考虑一个物体从A点移动到B点。所经过的距离通过相对于参考点的坐标长度来描述。

长度还描述了物理系统的几何特性,而时间则用于度量事件发生的先后顺序,例如从点 A 到点 B 的行进时间。

质量是物体所含物质量的度量,不随位置变化;而力则被视为一个物体对另一个物体的作用,例如推或拉,或引力作用。

在理论分析中,工程力学采用若干假设。首先,将物体视为一个具有质量的质点,其尺寸可忽略不计。

其次,无论其材料和所施加的载荷如何,颗粒均被视为刚体,忽略其变形。
