首先,当混凝土刚被压实后,较大骨料颗粒周围会形成水膜,这可能导致这些骨料附近的水灰比较远离区域更高。

接下来,在混凝土基质中,各种化合物溶解产生的钙离子、硫酸根离子、氢氧根离子和铝酸根离子会沉淀形成钙矾石和氢氧化钙。

在粗骨料附近,由于水灰比较高,这些化合物会结晶形成比致密水泥浆体中更大、孔隙更多的结构。

氢氧化钙常结晶为取向性的片状层,通常垂直于集料表面,从而增加了整体孔隙率。

最后,随着水化的进行,初始形成的较大针状钙矾石和氢氧化钙晶体之间的空间开始被次生的、结晶度较差的水化硅酸钙填充,同时还有较小的钙矾石和氢氧化钙晶体生成。
