Bond cracks are reflected by the curvilinear stress-strain curve of concrete, indicating an increase in strain, outpacing the stress.
When concrete reaches 70 to 90 percent of its maximum strength, cracks start to form through the mortar matrix, connecting existing bond cracks and creating a continuous pattern.
Naturally, an increase in the load applied to a material can lead to immediate failure when it reaches its nominal ultimate strength.
Ultrasonic and acoustic emission testing can track the progression of cracks in concrete.
With the development of cracks, there is a noticeable reduction in the transverse ultrasonic pulse velocity and an increase in acoustic emissions, indicating failure.

This phenomenon, termed fast propagation of cracks, could lead to failure over time if the load persists, a condition known as static fatigue.
If the applied load is further increased, rapid failure might occur at the peak strength level. The formation and evolution of microcracks can also be observed through non-destructive testing methods like ultrasonic and acoustic emission tests. As the concrete undergoes further stress, the crack propagation rate accelerates, leading to structural failure. At first, these microcracks stay stable. They usually do not grow much until the concrete reaches about 30 percent of its ultimate strength. As the load rises, the material can begin to change more quickly.

When concrete approaches about 70 to 90 percent of its maximum load-bearing capacity, cracks can spread through the mortar matrix. The mortar matrix is the mix of cement paste and fine aggregate. These growing cracks connect bond cracks and create a continuous cracking pattern.
