A key part of the model is Froude number similarity. The Froude number compares the effects of gravity and inertia in flowing water. Keeping this similarity correct helps the model match free-surface flow behavior in the full-size spillway, including waves and surface motion.

The model also adjusts discharge rates, flow velocities, and timing. Discharge rate is the amount of water flowing through the system, and it is reduced by the scale factor so the tests stay safe and manageable.
