The Froude number compares inertial and gravitational forces, and matching it helps copy surface flow features such as wave patterns and velocity. Practical limits can cause geometric distortion, which means the model does not match the real system at every scale. To reduce that gap, engineers may increase model roughness so the flow in the model better matches the flow in the river.
