The midpoint rule estimates volume for a double integral over a rectangular region. It is useful when a surface has a continuously changing height. In civil engineering, it can help estimate how much soil must be moved when planning a road across uneven terrain.

The road footprint is treated as a rectangle in the xy-plane. The terrain above a flat reference level is described by a continuous height function, f(x, y). The goal is to estimate the volume of soil between that surface and the reference plane.

To use the midpoint rule, the rectangular region is split into smaller sub-rectangles of equal size. If the region is divided into m parts in the x-direction and n parts in the y-direction, each small piece has area ΔA = Δx Δy. This makes the full region easier to work with.

Next, the midpoint of each sub-rectangle, (x_i*, y_j*), is found. The function value at that point, f(x_i*, y_j*), gives an approximate height for that section. Each sub-rectangle is then treated like the base of a vertical column of soil, with estimated volume f(x_i*, y_j*)ΔA.

The total approximate volume comes from adding the volumes of all the columns. For a double integral, this is written as a double sum over all sub-rectangles. The approximation becomes more accurate as the region is divided into finer pieces, so the midpoint rule is a practical way to estimate earthwork volume in engineering.
