Physiological needs are the most fundamental level in Maslow's hierarchy, located at the pyramid's base. These include hunger, thirst, sex, physical comfort, and survival—components necessary to sustain life. Once individuals satisfy physiological needs through food and water, they progress toward higher-level needs and personal growth.

Safety needs emerge after physiological needs are met and focus on stability, predictability, and protection from danger. While physiological needs sustain life through food and water, safety needs create a secure environment where individuals feel protected from physical and emotional harm and can develop further.

Social needs involve the desire for love, companionship, and belonging to groups and families. These needs give individuals a sense of acceptance and connection with others. Once lower-level needs are satisfied, people seek meaningful relationships and community bonds to fulfill their social requirements and feel valued.

Self-esteem represents the need for respect, trust, and admiration from others and oneself, encompassing competence, self-confidence, and independence. This need emerges after social belonging is achieved and motivates individuals to feel valued, capable, and worthy of recognition in their personal and professional lives.

Self-actualization is the highest level of Maslow's hierarchy, representing the need to reach one's greatest potential through personal development and self-acceptance. It can only be achieved once other human needs are met and reflects an individual's desire for personal fulfillment, growth, and acceptance of oneself and others.

Although Maslow explains that individuals typically ascend the hierarchy sequentially, exceptions exist. A person may prioritize safety or values over lower-level needs—for example, risking personal safety to help others. Higher-level needs remain necessary to inspire continued positive direction in life and sustained motivation.

Recognizing that human motivation stems from hierarchical needs helps healthcare providers address patient wellness holistically. Understanding these needs informs levels of health promotion and illness prevention strategies, enabling nurses to support patients in meeting fundamental requirements before addressing higher-level wellness and personal development goals.
