Q1: What is the olfactory nerve and what does it do?
The olfactory nerve, or cranial nerve I, is a purely sensory nerve dedicated to the sense of smell. It originates in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity and transmits sensory data to the olfactory bulb in the brain. Damage to this nerve can result in anosmia, the loss of smell either unilaterally or bilaterally.
Q2: How does the optic nerve transmit visual information to the brain?
The optic nerve, cranial nerve II, is a sensory nerve that serves as the visual conduit between the eye and brain. It transmits visual signals from the retina to the visual cortex, enabling vision. Damage to the optic nerve can result in visual impairments or blindness.
Q3: Which cranial nerves control eye movements?
The oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves control eye movements. The oculomotor nerve innervates most extrinsic eye muscles and controls pupil constriction and eyelid opening. The trochlear nerve, the smallest cranial nerve, innervates the superior oblique muscle. The abducens nerve controls the lateral rectus muscle for outward eye movement.

The trigeminal nerve, cranial nerve V, is the largest cranial nerve with both sensory and motor functions. Its three divisions—ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular—provide facial sensation and motor control to the muscles of mastication. Damage can cause facial numbness, trigeminal neuralgia, or weakness in chewing muscles.

Damage to this nerve causes ptosis, a drooping eyelid, along with a dilated pupil and limited eye movement in multiple directions. These symptoms reflect the nerve's critical role in autonomic and motor control.
