In an average adult male, approximately 40 liters of total body water divides into two main compartments: intracellular fluid (ICF) accounts for about 25 liters, roughly two-thirds of total water content, while extracellular fluid (ECF) comprises the remaining 15 liters or one-third. The ECF further subdivides into blood plasma and interstitial fluid, plus secondary fluids including lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, and synovial fluid.

Body water percentage varies significantly based on age, sex, body mass, and body fat percentage. Infants have approximately 73% body water due to lower body fat and bone mass. This percentage decreases with age, averaging around 45% in elderly individuals. Healthy young males contain about 60% body water, while females contain approximately 50%, reflecting differences in body composition and fat distribution.

Water moves across semi-permeable cell membranes through osmosis, traveling from areas of higher water concentration to areas of lower water concentration in response to solute concentration gradients. This osmotic gradient ensures water flows in and out of cells based on relative water and solute concentrations. Maintaining optimal solute balance inside and outside cells is crucial for normal cellular functioning and homeostasis.

Electrolytes are mineral ions derived from salts that possess an electric charge, such as sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl-). These solutes dissolve in body fluids and vary across different body regions. Maintaining an optimal balance of electrolytes inside and outside cells is crucial for normal cellular functioning, supporting processes like nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and fluid balance.

Muscle tissue contains the highest water content among body tissues, reflecting its metabolic activity and cellular composition. Bones and adipose tissue (fat) contain the lowest water content, as their cellular structure and composition require less water. These differences in tissue water content correlate with varying cellular composition and metabolic requirements across different body tissues.

Beyond blood plasma and interstitial fluid, the extracellular fluid encompasses several secondary fluids: lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, aqueous and vitreous humor in the eyes, synovial fluid in joints, serous fluid surrounding organs, and gastrointestinal secretions. These specialized fluids maintain distinct compositions suited to their specific anatomical locations and physiological functions.

Water is the main component of body fluids necessary for homeostasis, serving as the solvent for biochemical processes. Solutes—including proteins responsible for clotting and carbohydrate transport, plus electrolytes—dissolve within these aqueous solutions. The balance between water and solute concentrations across cell membranes, regulated by osmosis, ensures cells function normally and the body maintains stable internal conditions.
