嗜睡症是一种慢性睡眠障碍，其特征是普遍的、不受控制的嗜睡和其他睡眠障碍。其标志性症状之一是入睡后突然过渡到快速眼动睡眠，这会导致通常与此阶段相关的症状在清醒时意外发生。包括以下症状，通常持续几分钟到半小时。

• 睡眠麻痹和猝倒症:与快速眼动睡眠期间的麻痹类似，发作性睡病患者可能会出现猝倒症——一种突然、短暂的自主肌肉控制丧失，通常由强烈的情绪引发。与睡眠麻痹不同，猝倒症发生在患者清醒时，这可能导致跌倒或无法移动。
• 幻觉:在清醒和睡眠之间的过渡期（入睡前幻觉）或醒来时（入睡后幻觉）可能会出现生动、梦一般的幻觉。这些被认为是由于快速眼动睡眠侵入清醒状态造成的。
• 夜间睡眠中断:尽管嗜睡症患者白天嗜睡过度，但他们夜间睡眠往往不连贯，经常醒来。
• 自动行为:在短暂的睡眠期间，患者可能会继续执行日常任务或行为，但醒来后却对自己的行为毫无记忆。

嗜睡症与神经递质食欲素（也称为下丘脑分泌素）缺乏有关，食欲素是一种调节觉醒、清醒和食欲的重要神经递质。这种缺乏的确切原因尚不完全清楚，但似乎与下丘脑中产生食欲素的细胞的自身免疫性破坏有关。遗传因素也起到一定作用，因为某些基因变异在嗜睡症患者中更为常见。

虽然嗜睡症无法治愈，但药物和生活方式的调整可以显著控制症状。治疗通常包括使用兴奋剂来对抗白天嗜睡，以及使用抗抑郁药等药物来控制猝倒、幻觉和睡眠麻痹。新兴疗法针对食欲素系统，更直接地解决症状的根本原因。
