Piaget's second stage of cognitive development is the preoperational stage which spans from ages 2 to 7.
During this period, children engage in symbolic thinking by using symbols to represent objects, words, and ideas.
They participate in pretend play, such as imagining their arms are airplane wings or pretending a stick is a sword.
Children in this stage think more based on personal experience than general knowledge and struggle mentally with adult logic and manipulating information. For example, if a child has one slice of pizza cut into two pieces, they might believe they have more than someone with a single, uncut slice.

During this stage, children also often display egocentrism, making it difficult to see things from others' perspectives and assume others share their views and feelings.
