Borderline personality disorder is marked by instability in mood, self-image, and relationships, along with impulsive behaviors, typically beginning in early adulthood.
Individuals struggle with mood swings and an unstable sense of self and identity, leading to chronic emptiness and rapid changes in attitudes, career plans, and personal interests.
In addition, relationships are unstable and insecure and are marked by extreme shifts between idealization and devaluation, reflecting split thinking.
Self-destructive and impulsive behaviors, including substance abuse, excessive gambling, and suicidal gestures, often displaying inappropriate anger, sarcasm, and verbal aggression, are common.
Furthermore, the disorder has a genetic influence, with heritability between 30% and 70%.
Symptoms include irrational beliefs about powerlessness and hostility, emotional dysregulation, and destructive behaviors in response to perceived rejection, along with hypervigilance and feelings of alienation.
Finally, environmental factors like childhood abuse and neglect can exacerbate symptoms in those sensitive to environmental stressors.
