Naming Speed

Naming speed is the rate at which a person can recognize familiar visual stimuli and produce their names, making it an important measure of cognitive and language-related performance. The process requires rapid visual identification, access to stored verbal labels, coordination of attention and memory, and accurate speech production, often assessed with repeated arrays of letters, numbers, colors, or objects. In behavioral research, naming speed helps characterize individual differences in information processing and verbal fluency. It is also used in studies of reading development and learning difficulties, where slower performance may indicate challenges linking visual symbols with spoken language.

Naming Enantiomers

2023

The naming of enantiomers employs the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog rules that involve assigning priorities to different substituent groups at a chiral center. Each enantiomer, being a distinct molecule, is assigned a unique name by the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog (CIP) rules, also called the R–S system. The prefix R- or S- attached to the chiral centers in an enantiomer is dependent on the spatial arrangement of the four substituents on the chiral center. The R–S system essentially comprises three steps:...

Naming Skeletal Muscles

The naming of the approximately 700 muscles in the human body is based on a set of criteria designed to provide descriptive information about each muscle, making it easier to identify and remember them. The key factors used in naming muscles include: Region of the Body: Certain muscles in the body are classified based on their location or association with a specific area. For example, the temporalis muscle is in the head region, whereas the brachialis is in the arm. Position and Depth:...

Comparing the Frequency Effect Between the Lexical Decision and Naming Tasks in Chinese

2016

Researchers adopt both the lexical decision task and the naming task to investigate some important topics such as character/word recognition by comparing the frequency effect between these two tasks. This article introduces this approach through two exemplar experiments and elaborates on the underlying logic.

Common Names of Aldehydes and Ketones

2023

Some common aldehydes and ketones are popularly known by their common names used historically and predate the IUPAC nomenclature. Common names of aldehydes are derived from the names of their corresponding acid. For instance, the two-carbon aldehyde–acetaldehyde derives its name from the corresponding acid–acetic acid. Similarly, formaldehyde derives its name from formic acid and benzaldehyde from benzoic acid. Aliphatic ketones are named by suffixing the word “ketone” to the alphabetically...

Distribution of Molecular Speeds

2023

The motion of molecules in a gas is random in magnitude and direction for individual molecules, but a gas of many molecules has a predictable distribution of molecular speeds. This predictable distribution of molecular speeds is known as the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The distribution of molecular speeds in liquids is comparable to that of gases but not identical and can help to understand the phenomenon of the boiling and vapor pressure of a liquid. Consider that a molecule requires a...
