Reaching Attempts

Reaching attempts are goal-directed behaviors in which an individual extends or moves a limb toward a target, providing a measurable indicator of motor intention and action. They involve coordinating sensory information, motor planning, postural control, and limb movement, with each attempt shaped by the target’s location, accessibility, and the outcome of previous actions. Researchers quantify reaching attempts by recording their frequency, direction, accuracy, and success, often during structured behavioral tasks. These measures help characterize sensorimotor development, motivation, learning, and impairment, and support studies of neural control, rehabilitation, and responses to experimental treatments.

Assessing Dexterity with Reaching Tasks

2023

Reaching tasks are employed in behavioral neuroscience to investigate motor learning and forelimb dexterity. Much like human hands, rodents have dexterous forepaws, which are necessary for executing coordinated and precise motor movements. Experimenters may utilize food rewards to train rodents to reach and for testing their reaching abilities. These tasks help behavioral neuroscientist in understanding how CNS injuries, such as a stroke, may impair reaching ability and dexterity in humans.

Reaching is a fundamental skill that allows humans to interact with the environment. Several studies have aimed to characterize reaching behavior using a variety of methodologies. This paper offers an open-source application of transcranial magnetic stimulation to assess the state of corticospinal excitability in humans during reaching task performance.
