Fugl-meyer Assessment

The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) is a standardized, performance-based clinical scale that measures motor impairment and recovery after stroke, making it a key outcome measure in neurorehabilitation and bioengineering research. It evaluates movement, reflex activity, sensation, balance, joint range of motion, and pain through structured tasks, with item scores reflecting the degree of impairment rather than simply recording task completion. Clinicians and researchers use FMA results to characterize sensorimotor deficits, track changes during rehabilitation, and compare treatment outcomes. In bioengineering, the assessment helps validate robotic therapy, wearable sensors, brain-computer interfaces, and other technologies designed to restore motor function.
