Led Construction

LED construction is the design and assembly of light-emitting diodes, semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy into visible or near-infrared light. In a typical LED, a p-n junction combines differently doped semiconductor layers; when forward-biased, electrons and holes recombine in the active region and release photons, while electrodes, substrates, encapsulants, and lenses support electrical connection, heat dissipation, and light delivery. In bioengineering, engineered LEDs provide controlled illumination for optical sensing, microscopy, photobiomodulation, and studies of cell or tissue responses to light. Their tunable wavelength, compact size, and low energy demand support portable instruments and precisely controlled biological experiments.

Here, we demonstrate fabrication of collagen-based, tissue constructs containing skeletal myoblasts. These 3-D engineered constructs may be used to replace or repair tissues in vivo. For our purposes, we have designed these as an atrioventricular electrical conduit for the repair of complete heart block[1].
