Microwell Molds

Microwell molds are patterned devices that create arrays of small, uniform wells for organizing cells, biomaterials, or other microscale samples under controlled laboratory conditions. Their recessed features confine suspended cells or cell-laden materials, promoting defined aggregation and enabling consistent control of structure, size, and spatial arrangement during culture or fabrication. In bioengineering, microwell molds support the production of spheroids, organoids, and tissue-like constructs for studying cell behavior, modeling disease, screening drugs, and developing regenerative medicine strategies. By improving experimental reproducibility and enabling parallel sample generation, they help connect microscale fabrication with quantitative biological research.

Source: Fattahi, N., et al. Photodegradable Hydrogel Interfaces for Bacteria Screening, Selection, and Isolation. J. Vis. Exp. (2021)This video demonstrates the use of photodegradable hydrogels to isolate bacterial colonies within silicon microwell arrays. Bacterial cells are first loaded into microwells, encapsulated in a crosslinked hydrogel, and cultured into distinct colonies. Upon exposure to ultraviolet light, targeted degradation of the hydrogel enables selective extraction of individual...
