Alarm Calls

Alarm calls are specialized animal signals that warn nearby individuals about predators or other dangers, helping groups respond to threats. In many species, an individual that detects a predator produces a characteristic vocal or acoustic signal, and listeners adjust their behavior by freezing, fleeing, hiding, mobbing, or increasing vigilance; call features may vary with the type or urgency of danger. Studying alarm calls reveals how communication influences survival, cooperation, and natural selection. In biology, researchers use them to investigate animal behavior, predator-prey interactions, social organization, and the evolution of information-sharing systems.

Making Choice Chambers ExpandBefore beginning the experiments, use one of the Sharpies from the lab table to trace a line around the circumference of the bottom of both bottles. One line should be 1 cm from the base of the bottle and the other should be 1.5 cm from the base of the bottle. Use a razor blade to make a small cut in each bottle at the mark. Then, insert the scissors and carefully cut along the line until the bottoms of the bottles are removed completely. Fit one bottle bottom into...

Graphene Biosensor-Based Field-Effect Biosensing to Detect Protein-Protein Interactions

In this video, we describe the field-effect biosensing (FEB) technology to detect and quantify protein-protein interactions. The target proteins immobilized on the graphene biosensor interact with analyte proteins in solution, resulting in electrical current alterations in the FEB system. This change in the electrical response indicates the binding affinity between the proteins.

Source: Arianna Brown, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Waves are disturbances that propagate through a material medium or empty space. Light waves can travel through a vacuum and some forms of matter, and are transverse in nature, which means that the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. However, sound waves are pressure waves that travel through an elastic medium like air,...

We demonstrate how an objective measure can be employed in the widely employed rubber hand illusion paradigm. This measure is obtained by modifying the well-established crossmodal congruency task. This task allows the investigation of multisensory processes which are critical for modulations of body representations as in the rubber hand illusion.
