Cancer Patient Therapy

Cancer patient therapy refers to the medical treatment of malignant disease, with the goals of eliminating cancer, slowing its progression, preventing recurrence, and relieving symptoms. Depending on the tumor’s type, stage, location, and molecular features, therapy may remove cancer surgically, damage tumor-cell DNA with radiation, block growth signals with targeted drugs, or stimulate immune cells to recognize and destroy malignant cells; chemotherapy affects rapidly dividing cells throughout the body. In biology and clinical research, these approaches support personalized treatment planning and help investigators evaluate tumor responses, treatment resistance, toxicity, and long-term outcomes such as remission, survival, and quality of life.

Utilizing patient-derived tumors in a subcutaneous preclinical model is an excellent way to study the efficacy of novel therapies, predictive biomarker discovery, and drug resistant pathways. This model, in the drug development process, is essential in determining the fate of many novel anti-cancer therapies prior to clinical investigation.

Use of Cerenkov Luminescence Imaging (CLI) for monitoring preclinical cancer treatment is described here. This method takes advantage of Cerenkov Radiation (CR) and optical imaging (OI) to visualize radiolabeled probes and thus provides an alternative to PET in preclinical therapeutic monitoring and drug screening.

Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients. However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
