Contact Transmission

Contact transmission is the spread of infectious agents between hosts through direct physical contact or contact with contaminated objects and surfaces. During transmission, pathogens move from an infected person, animal, or environmental reservoir to a susceptible host, then enter through mucous membranes, the respiratory tract, or breaks in the skin; direct contact may include touching, while indirect contact involves fomites such as equipment or shared materials. In biology and public health, understanding these routes supports infection-control measures, including hand hygiene, surface disinfection, protective equipment, isolation, and contact tracing, helping reduce outbreaks in healthcare, community, and research settings.

Transmission-based Precautions I: Contact, Enteric, and Droplets

2025

Transmission-based precautions are for patients known to be infected or suspected to be infected or colonized with organisms that pose a significant risk to others. Some transmission-based precautions include contact, enteric, and droplet. Contact Precautions: Contact precautions are the measures taken to prevent the transmission of infectious agents, especially epidemiologically important microorganisms such as MRSA or influenza, primarily transmitted through direct or indirect contact with an...

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

2022

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a murine experimental model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). CHS is based on sensitization with reactive hapten by painting the shaved skin of the chest and abdomen, with a subsequent ear skin challenge with a diluted hapten, causing a swelling reaction that is assessed in various ways.

Fluorescence Fluctuation Spectroscopy to Study Protein Interaction at Cell Contacts

2025

This video demonstrates the use of fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy to detect the interaction among cell surface proteins at cell-cell contacts. By expressing the transmembrane adhesion receptor of interest labeled with a fluorescent protein and mixing two different cell populations harboring two spectrally separated fluorescent labels, the trans-interaction between the receptors of two neighboring cells with different-colored fluorescence is assessed via cross-correlation in the...

Larval Contact Assay: A Procedure to Evaluate Mosquito Larval Mortality following Direct Contact with Test Larvicidal Compound

2025

In this video, we describe the larval contact assay to evaluate the toxicity of the dopamine receptor antagonist amitriptyline on the third instar stage larvae of mosquitoes, known vectors of several human infectious diseases. Assessing the larval mortality upon incubation with different amitriptyline concentrations over different time intervals helps determine its lethal concentration 50.
