Filter Paper Assay

The filter paper assay is a laboratory method for measuring cellulase activity, using cellulose-rich filter paper as a standardized substrate. In a buffered reaction, cellulase enzymes hydrolyze the paper’s β-1,4-glycosidic bonds, releasing soluble reducing sugars; their concentration is then estimated through a colorimetric detection reaction and compared with a calibration standard. This assay provides a consistent measure of total cellulase activity in microbial cultures, purified enzymes, and environmental samples. Researchers use it to compare enzyme production, evaluate reaction conditions, and assess biological systems or bioprocesses relevant to cellulose degradation and biomass conversion.

Research articles are structured documents designed to communicate scientific findings efficiently and transparently. Rather than reading them sequentially like a narrative, readers can approach them strategically by understanding their standardized organization. Evaluating the title, authors, and institutional affiliations provides an initial indication of relevance, expertise, and credibility. The Abstract offers a concise summary of the study’s objective, methodology, and main findings,...

Here, we present a new technique to culture chick embryos ex ovo for time-lapse imaging using transmitted light and fluorescence microscopy. The submerged filter paper sandwich is a variant of the well-established filter paper carrier technique1 that allows for the culturing of chick embryos fully-submerged in a liquid culture medium.

A Paper-Based Immunoassay for the Detection of Immunoglobulin G

The video demonstrates a paper-based immunoassay, involving amine-functionalized cellulose discs cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. Covalent immobilization of IgG-Fc-specific capture antibodies, followed by the introduction of immunoglobulin G and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated detection antibodies, results in a color change confirming the presence of immunoglobulin G.

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Passive Filters

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...
