Gramicidin Channels

Gramicidin channels are narrow membrane-spanning pores formed by gramicidin peptides, providing a simple model for studying ion transport across biological membranes. Two peptide molecules join end to end within a lipid bilayer to create a water-filled channel that selectively conducts small monovalent cations, such as sodium and potassium, down their electrochemical gradients. Their single-channel activity can be measured through changes in membrane current, allowing researchers to examine permeability, conductance, and membrane structure. In biology and biophysics, gramicidin channels support studies of membrane function, ion-channel mechanisms, antibiotic action, and the effects of lipid composition on protein-mediated transport.

Ion Channels

2019

The movement of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium into and out of the cell is essential to maintain the electrochemical gradient in living cells. The ion channels—a class of membrane transport proteins—help maintain this ionic gradient for the smooth functioning of physiological activities such as maintaining cell size and volume, conducting nerve impulses, and gas and nutrient exchange. Ion channels are specialized integral membrane proteins on the plasma membrane that allow specific...

Here we demonstrate how to fabricate thermoplastic microfluidic chips using hot embossing and heat sealing. Then we demonstrate how to use in situ light directed surface grafting and polymerization through the sealed chip to form the composite solid phase columns.

Channel Metrics

2025

Channel metrics are crucial in efficiently distributing products across various sales channels, such as retail stores, online platforms, and wholesale distributors. These metrics are instrumental in ensuring that products reach the intended markets. One key measure of distribution efficiency is product availability, which refers to how often products are accessible in critical sales outlets. For instance, a beverage company ensuring that its drinks are stocked in 90% of local grocery stores is...

Channel Rhodopsins

2023

Most organisms use photoreceptors to sense and respond to light. Examples of photoreceptors include bacteriorhodopsins and bacteriophytochromes in some bacteria, phytochromes in plants, and rhodopsins in the photoreceptor cells of the vertebral retina. The light-sensitive property of these receptors is because of the bound chromophores, such as bilin in the phytochromes and retinal in the rhodopsins. Rhodopsins belong to the family of cell surface proteins called G-protein coupled receptors,...

Study of Cell Migration in Microfabricated Channels
