Microbiology Fundamentals

Microbiology fundamentals is the study of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, algae, and viruses, and the principles governing their structure, function, diversity, and interactions. It examines how microbial cells obtain energy and nutrients, reproduce, exchange genetic information, and respond to environmental conditions, while laboratory methods such as microscopy, culturing, staining, and molecular analysis reveal these processes. These foundations help explain infection, immunity, nutrient cycling, fermentation, and microbial roles in ecosystems. They also support applications in clinical diagnosis, antimicrobial development, biotechnology, food production, and environmental monitoring, providing essential context for biological research and public health.

According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is called the fundamental attribution...

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Millions of mice and rats are bred for use in biomedical research each year. Worldwide, there are several large commercial breeding facilities that supply mice to research laboratories, but many facilities also choose to breed mice and rats in-house to reduce costs and increase research options. When breeding in the animal facility, researchers are able to manipulate the genetics of the...
