Midgut Juice

Midgut juice is the digestive fluid produced in the midgut of many invertebrates, especially insects, where it supports the chemical breakdown and absorption of food. Secreted by midgut epithelial cells and associated digestive tissues, it contains enzymes such as proteases, carbohydrases, and lipases, while its often alkaline conditions help activate digestion and influence nutrient solubility. Studying midgut juice reveals how animals process nutrients, regulate digestive conditions, and interact with ingested microbes or toxins. In biology and entomology, its composition informs research on insect physiology, host-pathogen interactions, and strategies for developing selective pest-control methods.

Source: Liu, X., et al. A Bacterial Oral Feeding Assay with Antibiotic-Treated Mosquitoes. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the dissection of the mosquito midgut to isolate gut bacteria. The midgut is extracted from the digestive tract, homogenized to release the bacteria, and plated on nutrient agar to culture bacterial colonies.

Pancreatic Juice and Secretion

Pancreatic juice is a clear fluid produced by the pancreas, containing water, salts, sodium bicarbonate, and enzymes vital for digestion in the small intestine. It helps break down large molecules, facilitating nutrient absorption. When acidic chyme from the stomach enters the duodenum, it triggers the release of secretin, a hormone that prompts pancreatic juice secretion. After a fatty meal, cholecystokinin, another hormone, stimulates gallbladder contraction and enhances enzyme-rich...
