Mosquito Reproductive Fitness

Mosquito reproductive fitness is the biological capacity of a mosquito to survive, mate successfully, produce viable offspring, and pass its genes to the next generation, making it a key measure of population performance. It reflects the combined effects of traits such as mating success, blood-feeding and egg production, fertility, development, and offspring survival under particular environmental conditions. In biology, measuring these components helps researchers compare mosquito populations, assess how environmental change or control interventions alter reproduction, and predict effects on population growth and persistence. Because mosquito abundance influences pathogen transmission, reproductive fitness also informs strategies for managing disease vectors.

2023

The present protocol describes how to measure common life parameter data in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, including fecundity, wing size, fertility, sex ratio, viability, development times, male contribution, and adult longevity. These measurements can be used to assess the fitness of transgenic mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia are being released into natural populations to suppress the transmission of arboviruses. We describe methods to rear Ae. aegypti with Wolbachia infections in the laboratory for experiments and field release, taking precautions to minimize laboratory adaptation and selection.

Yeast Reproduction

2023

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast that is an extremely valuable model organism. Importantly, S. cerevisiae is a unicellular eukaryote that undergoes many of the same biological processes as humans. This video provides an introduction to the yeast cell cycle, and explains how S. cerevisiae reproduces both asexually and sexually Yeast reproduce asexually through a process known as budding. In contrast, yeast sometimes participate in sexual reproduction, which is important because...
