Pig Brain Model

Pig brain models are experimental systems that use porcine brain tissue or animals to investigate nervous-system structure, function, and disease, offering a biologically relevant bridge between basic research and human studies. Their value stems from the pig brain’s relatively large size, folded cerebral cortex, and comparable organization of selected neural and vascular structures, which allow researchers to examine processes such as brain injury, neurodegeneration, drug delivery, and surgical intervention under controlled conditions. Depending on the study, investigators analyze intact brains, tissue sections, or living animals with imaging, electrophysiology, histology, and behavioral measurements. These models support translational biology by testing mechanisms and treatments before clinical research.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Administration of medications, experimental drugs, and other test substances in pigs requires an appropriate route based on study objectives, compound properties, and animal welfare considerations. Noninvasive delivery through...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Blood collection is a common procedure in swine research and clinical studies. The choice of sampling site depends on the animal's age, body size, the volume of blood required, the study objectives and approved IACUC...

Anesthesia and Monitoring in a Pig Model

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Pigs are commonly used in biomedical and surgical research because of their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. During procedures, anesthesia prevents pain, reduces stress, limits movement, and supports animal...
