Porcine Model

A porcine model is a pig used in biological and biomedical research to represent aspects of human anatomy, physiology, disease, or treatment response. Its value arises from similarities in organ structure, body size, metabolism, and immune function, while controlled breeding, housing, and experimental conditions allow researchers to measure biological changes and compare interventions. Porcine models support studies of cardiovascular disease, transplantation, infectious disease, wound healing, nutrition, and medical devices, including procedures that require clinically relevant anatomy. Findings can help refine hypotheses, evaluate safety and efficacy, and guide translation toward human studies, although species-specific differences require careful interpretation.
